As I said, post a random picture about your country. It can be anything, it just has to be related to your country. :)

We also have ice roads, mostly over lakes, as they often provide "short cuts" during winter. The ice road of Hailuoto is our longest one, at 26 km, and it goes over the sea (Gulf of Bothnia).

Meanwhile, in America.

This is the Old St. Nicholas Breaker, the only remaining anthracite coal breaker in what was once the capital of anthracite coal-mining in the world (North Eastern Pennsylvania). The area still has over 95% of the world's anthracite coal, though a large portion of it is inaccessible because of mine flooding. The only other existing veins of anthracite coal, which is the hardest, hottest- and longest-burning coal in the world, are found in the Rhineland.

Here's the breaker when it was in full operation in the 1970s:
http://www.undergroundminers.com/stnick1.jpg

Oh and the grass there? That's not just because it's winter, that's how it always looks because of the vast amount of coal and iron waste in the soil. The only green around would be the birch trees, which for some reason grow exceptionally well in coal fields.

Geography

Minsk is located on the southeastern slope of the Minsk Hills, a region of rolling hills running from the southwest (upper reaches of the river Nioman) to the northeast – that is, to the Lukomskaye lake in northwestern Belarus. The average altitude above sea level is 220 metres (720 ft). The geography of Minsk was formed during the two most recent Ice Ages. The Svislach river, which flows across the city from the northwest to the southeast, is located in the urstrohmtal, an ancient river valley formed by water flowing from melting ice sheets at the end of the last Ice Age. Minsk was initially founded on the hills. However, in the 20th century, it grew to include the relatively flat plains in the southeast. The western parts of the city are the most hilly.
Satellite view.

Minsk is located in the area of mixed forests typical for most of Belarus. Pinewood and mixed forests are still present at the edge of the city, especially in the north and east. Some of the forests were transformed into parks (for instance, the Chelyuskinites Park) as the city grew.

Early history
The Saviour Church (1577) is part of an archaeological preservation in Zaslavl, 23 km (14 mi) northwest of Minsk.

The area of today's Minsk was settled by the Early East Slavs by the 9th century. The Svislach River valley was the settlement boundary between two Early East Slav tribes – the Krivichs and Dregovichs. By 980, the area was incorporated into the early mediaeval Principality of Polatsk, one of the earliest East Slav states. Minsk was first mentioned in the name form Měneskъ (Мѣнескъ) in the Primary Chronicle for the year 1067 in association with the Battle on the river Nemiga.[2] 1067 is now widely accepted as the founding year of Minsk. City authorities consider the date of 2 September 1067, to be the exact founding date of the city,[3] though the town (by then fortified by wooden walls) had certainly existed for some time by then. The origin of the name is unknown but there are several theories.

In the early 12th century, the Principality of Polatsk disintegrated into smaller fiefs. The Principality of Minsk was established by one of the Polatsk dynasty princes. In 1129, the Principality of Minsk was annexed by Kiev, the dominant principality of Kievan Rus; however in 1146 the Polatsk dynasty regained control of the principality. By 1150, Minsk rivalled Polatsk as the major city in the former Principality of Polatsk. The princes of Minsk and Polatsk were engaged in years of struggle trying to unite all lands previously under the rule of Polatsk.

Kaali meteorite crater on the island of Saaremaa.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VQf5IuDJ2ps/TLwcT6JvLjI/AAAAAAAAAAo/N1n0lubqlZc/s1600/Kaali_meteorite_crater.jpg

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f0/Kaali_crater_panorama.jpg

There are 8 smaller craters on the island of Saaremaa.

Kaali is a group of 9 meteorite craters located on the Estonian island of Saaremaa. Formed in the 7th century BCE, it is one of the most recent craters created by an impact event and the only known major impact event that has occurred in a populated area.

Formation

The impact is thought to have occurred in the Holocene, around 660 ± 85 BCE. The craters were formed by an incoming meteor with an estimated impact velocity of between 10 and 20 km/s with a total mass of between 20 and 80 metric tonnes.

At an altitude of 5–10 km, the meteorite broke into pieces and fell to the Earth in fragments, the greatest of which produced a crater with a diameter of 110 m and a depth of 22 m. Kaali Lake (Estonian: Kaali järv) exists in the bottom of this crater. Eight smaller craters are also associated with this bombardment. Their diameters range from 12 to 40 meters and their respective depths vary from one to four meters. They are all within one kilometer of the main crater.

Effects

At the time of the impact, Estonia was in the Nordic Bronze Age and the site was forested with a small human population. The impact energy of about 80 TJ (20 kilotons of TNT) is comparable with that of the Hiroshima bomb blast. It incinerated forests within a 6 km radius.

In mythology

Scholars maintain that the event figured prominently in regional mythology. It was, and still is, considered a sacred lake. There is archaeological evidence that it may well have been a place of ritual sacrifice. At some point during the early Iron Age, the lake was surrounded by a stone wall measuring 470 meters in length, with a median width of about 2.5 meters and an average height of 2.0 meters.[citation needed]

Finnish mythology has stories that may originate with the formation of Kaali. One of them is in runes 47, 48 and 49 of the Kalevala epic: Louhi, the evil wizard, steals the Sun and fire from people, causing total darkness. Ukko, the god of the sky, orders a new Sun to be made from a spark. The virgin of the air starts to make a new Sun, but the spark drops from the sky and hits the ground. This spark goes to an "Aluen" or "Kalevan"[3] lake and causes its water to rise. Finnish heroes see the ball of fire falling somewhere "behind the Neva river" (the direction of Estonia from Karelia). The heroes head that direction to seek fire, and they finally gather flames from a forest fire.

According to a theory first proposed by Lennart Meri, it is possible that Saaremaa was the legendary Thule island, first mentioned by ancient Greek geographer Pytheas, whereas the name "Thule" could have been connected to the Finnic word tule ("(of) fire") and the folklore of Estonia, which depicts the birth of the crater lake in Kaali. Kaali was considered the place where "The sun went to rest."

By percentage, Estonia has the most meteorite craters(the craters in Saaremaa aren't the only ones) in the entire world.

Well, the ones who live in those areas can't afford to immigrate anywhere, those who immigrate are mostly from better areas of the "emerging" districts of Lima (distritos emergentes - clase baja/media emergente) such as San Juan de Lurigancho or Villa el Salvador, founded by migrants from the highlands in the 80's and 70's. They are also considered relatively poor, but not as poor as the people in the pictures I've put.

She is with the leaders of the muslims, in Spain most of foreigners can vote to the "municipales" or local to elect mayors.

Maybe I forgot to say that this picture is related to news of TODAY in Spain, due to yesterday's manifestations of the town of Salt against the abuses of the muslims with the locals, the one of the mayoress of the previous picture. So my picture is quite random picture among TODAY's cover news in Spain.

The Old Union Stockyards in Chicago, of which only the gate remains. Long the focus of progressive reforms, the horrific meat-packing practises pioneered here that included dying rotten meat and putting it back on the market, feeding discarded remains of slaughtered animals to still-living livestock, and several other practises in factory farming that have recently been revealed to still be going on, the Stockyards were the focus of Upton Sinclair's syndicated account in The Jungle.

One of my favourite anecdotes is that Theodore Roosevelt was reading the latest instalment of The Jungle in the newspaper during breakfast, and became so infuriated with what he read that he picked up the plate of sausages on the table (all from Chicago) and flung the lot of them out the window.

The lost art of Campanero, the Bell, a true symbol that represents us, an ancient partner of our cultures.

Many different Tañidos, from the calling to battle for the people, to the protective tañido in la Noche de los Difuntos to keep away the souls and the witches and other dark beings, to the sweet and tragic tañido when a little child, still not baptized dies... and many more accompanied our people from hundred of years... now in Spain there are few Maestros Campaneros and the art is almost extincted.

The Old Field Burying Ground (now known as the Union Street Cemetery) in my home town of West Springfield, MA; the 1st burial was in 1711. It is the only cemetery in town, which is owned by the town; all others are either church related or administered by private associations...last burial was in the late 19th century.

http://www.west-springfield.ma.us/Public_Documents/WSpringfieldMA_Historian/HistoricTour/WalkingTour2/2E.jpg

...including the Paucatuck Cemetery (private) established about 1770...they still have interments occurring.

http://www.west-springfield.ma.us/Public_Documents/WSpringfieldMA_Historian/HistoricTour/DrivingTour/3H.jpg

...and the Park Street Cemetery (administered by the 1st Congregational Church, est 1696), first burial in 1758...last burial was in 1996.

http://www.west-springfield.ma.us/Public_Documents/WSpringfieldMA_Historian/HistoricTour/WalkingTour1/1M.jpg

The Ashleyville Cemetery, named after the Ashley family who were amongst the earliest settlers of West Springfield, and amongst the largest land owners. This section of the town was their property and they donated the land in 1770. It is overseen by a private foundation, which still accepts burials.

http://www.west-springfield.ma.us/Public_Documents/WSpringfieldMA_Historian/HistoricTour/DrivingTour/3L.jpg

Prior to the Old Field Burying Ground, all interments had to take place in Springfield, on the east side of the river, as West Springfield had no official consecrated ground.

A statue of Alfred the Great (849 – 26 Oct. 899), a very important figure in English history. A defender of the southern Anglo-Saxon kingdoms against the Vikings, he earned the title 'the Great', and is the only English king to have done so. He was styled Rex Angulsaxonum (King of the Anglo-Saxons) and Rex Anglorum et Saxonum (King of the Angles and Saxons). He is considered a saint by many Catholics, but has never been officially canonised.

My favourite site in Memphis: Nathan Bedford Forrest Park, centred on the equestrian statue of the hero of the Western Campaign. In a town that's been dominated by criminal Negroes (that's not an empty slur - the first coloured mayor threatened race war if he didn't win) for years, and is in fact over 70% coloured, General Forrest stands as a symbol of the city's Euro-American and Southern heritage in the face of the culture-destroying, ignorant, and irreverent Negro.

Don Hernán Cortés Statue in Medellín (the original, in Extremadura, Spain) homeland of this conquistador, one of the most incredible warriors and commanders in the history of humanity, destroyer of evil aztec Empire, appeared desecrated in red paint.

A group of sudaca immigrants from mexico called "grupo de ciudadanos mexicanos anónimos" did the infamous act in spaniard soil, in the home of the Hero.

They are not enough happy not having a statue in their country mexico, or in the city founded by this man, who released most mexicans from the evil empire of aztecs, honoring this man, that they dare to come to Europe, to Spain and the homeland pueblo of this HERO and attack cowardly his statue in our own land.

The people of the pueblo already cleaned statue and the inmigrant attackers have still not been caught.

And an ancient one, seems that animal was a deity adored by ancient europeans as well, as usual in bulls. With the lost of the cult.

Some people relate the spanish Toro de Lidia to them in some and defend the quite correct and confirmed idea that our corridas come from an ancient european cult to these mythic-animals, (greeks wrote that atlants did a duel similar to modern corridas) symbols of fertility, male powers of nature and bravery, and conclude that the cost of maintaining the Toro Bravo, overwhelm the profits from him... so he is not extincted in europe after all because he is the main character of our ancient cult.

Wow........ What are the names on the base of it? Some kind of memorial?

We called such beasts 'urs' once upon a time. A village in my county is named Urswick after them, or rather after the lake there, which they must once have liked to bathe in.
http://www.cumbria-wildlife.org.uk/North%20of%20Sands/UrswickTarn-sunset.jpg

URSWICK TARN - This reed-fringed lowland tarn is at the head of a sheltered valley surrounded by low hills or "drumlins" and is only a couple of miles from the coast. It occupies a hollow or "kettle" left by receding ice. Water is scarce in limestone country so wild animals would have gathered here, leading to the old English name of Urse-wic or Bison lake. In turn, a human settlement arose making the area very rich in history since Roman times. The tarn is a wildlife have
The place has an ancient Northumbrian stone cross with runic inscription, too.

Ticonderoga was one of the historical sites he'd find for us to visit, which we did several times over the years.

When he did get a full week off, we'd go to the North Shore area of Massachusetts...

This is an older picture, taken when she was still in her permanant mooring at Old Mystic Seaport in Connecticut. The seaport museum is in the midst of a 5-year project to fully restore the Morgan to sailing condition. She was built in the whaling port of New Bedford, Massachusetts and made her maiden voyage in 1841 and was retired to the museum in 1941. During her life as an active whaler, she made 37 voyages to the whaling grounds.

The Seaport Museum is another place we used to visit when I was a child and youth.

Burgos has so many incredible medieval temples, that in any other town would be the centre of monumental-related tourism. Yet in Burgos, all of them are shadowed by the collosal Cathedra. One of the most important works of european gothic , and the first place to be declared Human Heritage Site in Spain (which accounts second in the world´s rank of countries according their number of Human Heritage Sites, only second to Italy)

This is the Josiah Day House, which is just off the north side of the town common in my home town

The front part is a brick "salt box" style house, which Josiah built in 1754. The rear is the original house, which was built in 1642 as a house for visiting parsons. The Day family received the land in 1696 and lived there until 1902, when they sold the property to a local historic society for preservation, as there were no heirs.

Here is a memorial to the first white man to set foot in my home region. :)

Regarding Francisco Garces O.F.M. Padre Francis Tomás Hermenogildo Garcés also founded Mission La Purisima Concepción de la Virgén Santisima, located near where the Gila River meets the Colorado River in Arizona.

As there was no protection from a manned Presidio and the Quechan Indians were upset because promises made by de Anza were not kept and they resented the appropriation of their crops and fields by settlers and soldiers, the Missions did not last long. The straw that broke the camel's back (so to speak) was a large group of colonists with some 1,000 head of cattle who arrived in 1781. While these colonists were heading for Los Angeles, the Indians thought they had come to settle and attacked on 18 July of that year. Chief Palma, a known friend of the padres and chief of the village closest to La Purisima, did not take part in the raid and arranged for a search for his friend Padre Garcés. Sadly, he gave the task to a member of the Nefora tribe which did not have as good a relationship with the padres. When Padre Garcés and his associates were found, this Indian ordered that they be killed. Thus, on 19 July 1781 Padres Francis Tomás Hermenogildo Garcés, Juan Antonio Barreneche, <table width="320" align="right" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr height="10"><td colspan="3" class="caption" bgcolor="white">

Ayacucho, Peru, 1980. In the early days of Shining Path's war as it gets cruder, this picture is from an assault to a police station, the only thing which remained untouched was the portrait of the president, then Fernando Belaunde Terry. This picture portrayed quite well the imminent crumbling of our still weak democratic regime...

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_CN-WSHG1KII/TC0QLemWC5I/AAAAAAAABUg/t0Luu5n9NvU/s1600/002A.jpg

It was not uncommon in those days to find in very important National Universities paintings supporting Shining Path, and many terrorists infiltrated in them trying to promote their ideology. In the picture, a classroom of the National University of San Marcos, the oldest in the Americas and the best state university in Peru, in the early 90's.

Two men helping an injured guy after the Tarata bombing in the middle-upper class district of Miraflores, 1992, which killed more 23 people and injured over a hundred. The bomb was planted in three cars by members of Shining Path. One of the bombs, luckily, didn't go off.

The leader of Shining Path, Abimael Guzmán, is captured in September of 1992, after about 70 000 people had lost their lives since the beginning of the conflict he started, and the whole apparatus of Shining Path crumbled with him. To this day, he doesn't regret one single thing he did. He is serving a lifetime sentence in jail, as well as his wife. He was found hiding in an house of a middle-upper class district of Lima. Had he not been captured soon enough then, he would have probably overthrown the government... I don't even want to imagine.

Just though I'd share some pics from that time of our history.

Trunk of the second tree planted in 1742

Gernikako Arbola (ENG: Tree of Guernica)

Gernikako Arbola ("the tree of Gernika" in Basque) is an oak tree that symbolizes traditional freedoms for the Biscayan people, and by extension for the Basque people as a whole. The Lords of Biscay (including kings of Castile and Carlist pretenders to the throne) swore to respect the Biscayan liberties under it, and the modern Lehendakari of the Basque Country swears his charge there.
