The southern part of Brazil, including both the southeastern and southern regions, is distinguishable by its heavily European and Western-based culture with a significant extra-Portuguese European influence, with the southeastern being the region that underwent the heaviest Italian influence, more specifically North Italian as the great majority of the immigrants came from Veneto and adjacent regions, and the south showing a pride in their German heritage brought by immigrants during the XIX and XX century.

Post pictures and anything related to the culture of the south of Brazil.

I agree, the others regions have so much non-European cultural influence to be included in the Western world. The architecture and population mindset is also very distinct.

Yeah, but I think the elites there at least belong to the ''West'' (most of them are white or predominantly Euro). There's no sense to say someone who's full Portuguese or nearly full isn't ''Western''.

Languages of the South

Besides Portuguese, there are others languages that were brought to Brazil and developed here under influence of various distinct dialects, inclunding the standard Portuguese, and they are spoken exclusively in the southern fringes of the country. Here are they with a brief description.

Talian

Talian is a dialect of the Venetian language, spoken primarily in the Serra Gaúcha region in the northeast of the state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. It is also spoken in other parts of Rio Grande do Sul, as well as in parts of Espirito Santo and of Santa Catarina. Despite the similar names, Talian is not derived from standard Italian (usually called italiano gramático or "grammatical Italian" in Brazil), but is mainly a mix of Venetian dialects influenced by other Gallo-Italian languages as well as local Portuguese.

Hunsrückisch Riograndeser

Hunsrückisch is a German dialect spoken in the Hunsrück region of Germany. This mountainous region of Germany has long been an exporter of emigrants to the United States, Brazil, Canada, Australia and other parts of the world. It's now spoken by German descendants in Rio Grande do Sul and others southern areas.

Pomeranian

Pomeranian or Pommeranisch is a dialect of Low Saxon spoken by the Pomeranians and their descendants here in Brazil, specially in Espírito Santo. The language is almost extinct in Pomerania but is still alive and common in Southern Brazil.

Some pictures of my hometown in Brazil, Curitiba. The European heritage in the city and state in general is far less German and Dutch but more Italian and Slav, mainly Ukranian and Polish. Other distinct ethnicities are Japanese, Lebanese and Syrian. The more "Brazilian" ethnicities are Paraná-born people from the countryside, people from São Paulo state and people from Bahia state.

Lovely pictures, Token and others! :thumb001:

Interesting that people here include states like Minas Gerais, Espirito Santo or Rio de Janeiro as part of a region that is the only one that could be considered "Western", aren't MG and RJ basicaly extentions of the Northeast with maybe a slight more Euro input?

I've read that the Center-West (Mato Grosso, Goiás....) is very Colonial Portuguese.

No. Minas Gerais is basically Colonial Portuguese with few Italians + Pardos and Blacks, but many of the ''whites'' there are full or nearly full European. Espírito Santo have many recent European settlers and like Rio and Minas Gerais many regions are predominantly White. These three states are kinda transitional between ''Pardo'' Brazil and ''White'' Brazil. They can vary depending on the region, but they are significantly more Euro than the Northeast. Rio is only very Black in the capital city and surrounding areas, the rest of the state is less africanized. Minas Gerais is predominantly White in the South and mixed-tri-racial in the North, it's like a microcosm of Brazil.

Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo are oficially part of the southeast region, together with São Paulo, that yes, is mostly a geopolitical division, but is also characterized by a distinct culture, vegetation and even climate. Center-West and even the Northeast have a lot of colonial Portuguese influence but they were so much influenced by indigenous and African culture and this is visible in toponym, dialectal variations, folklore and even genetics. In a genetic sense, the most European region of Brazil is the South followed by the Southeast and then the Center-West and those north of them. The recent European migrations certainly played a role in the cultural 'Europeanization' of the south (in the broader sense, including the southeast, like we are using in this thread), Italians that visit Brazil says that they feel at home in São Paulo, specially the non-metropolitan regions, and the same is true for Germans in the south.

That's interesting, when I came to this forum, I thought that most Brazilians were like balanced tri racials and that the SSA and Native American would be more significant. This has to do with Brazilian national teams and famous football players that I was used to see and to appreciate in my childhood and also due to two girls in my class who were very dark and unmistakabely SSA influenced.

Seems like that if you join all 210 million Brazilians into one person and perform a genetic test in that case, you will have something like this.

That's the perception everyone have of Brazil around the world. Everytime I said I was Brazilian when travelling some people were surprised. Some guys even asked for passport and said I was faking it. They think there are no whites in Brazil, lol.

But I thought Portuguese would know better, since Brazilian novelas are exhibited in Portugal and most actors are whites.

Oh yeah, I know that inland São Paulo state is very European (geneticaly speaking) but at the same time they have a lot of Amerindian toponyms, legacy of the Bandeirantes who spoke more Tupi than Portuguese. Sometimes corelating Genetics with culture might be wrong or inaccurate, for example in Roman times, a Briton and a Berber north african had nothing in common ancestraly speaking but they shared a lot of cultural aspects due to Roman citzenship.

Culture is something subjective though and it depends on the perspetive, on the eyes of someone from outside who never set a foot in Brazil, all brazilians are the same because they speak the same language and are traditionaly Christian. Religion and Language defines a culture.

Well, in a way we are more aware of what it happens in Brazil, Monday in the radio when I was coming home, they talked about a massacre in a Brazilian prison which didn't even kill 5 persons, as It wasn't of gigantic proportions in let's say Argentina, Iraq or China I think it would not even appear on Radio, so we have more news on Brazil more frequently then people might think.

But usualy most Males only watched 1 or 2 novels with the family when we were younger so we didn't have much expertise in that, Funk is popular here (unfortunately), and most Funk singers are Favelados, and most Brazilians living here are Nordestinos with obvious SSA influence so people have a misconcepted image of your country.

Yes, some people have that uninformed view but remember that Brazil is enormous and, alone, is larger than all European countries together so you can expect a huge cultural gap between the regions. Non-European toponym is present in Brazil, even in the southern regions to a lesser extent, but is also common in Iberia and this doesn't means nothing in reality.

I know, culturaly speaking do you and the inhabitants of your area/state feel more connected with the North/Northeast or with Uruguay/Argentina?

Wow, this is a hard question, but what i know for sure is that people from there feel culturally closer to Europeans and others westerners than to northerners. In my case, i grew up in a city where almost everyone had recent German ancestry, and they naturally feel closer to Germans specifically, Ouroboros can tell you better about the southeast.

I know many of them, that's true, a very receptive people. This is my ambition, traveling around the country in the future. Anyway I do prefer more countrysides places than big metropolis... I can't see identity in big metropolis, looks like a mess.

I would never live in a big city I think. That's why I even think myself as a truck driver.

Thanks. :thumb001:

The culture of Rio de Janeiro has more African influence than indigenous, in our dialects, foods(Feijoada, samba, pagode, our accent, some words we often says) etc. Mainly in the capital and Baixada fluminense, and everyone in Rio de Janeiro shares dialects and cultures because Brazil has never been segregated in neighborhoods like the US. The rural areas of Rio de Janeiro is practically considered part of Minas Gerais. Rio is a super small State. And genetically the people here are more European, even blacks here. In Rio de Janeiro people who declares themselves black usually has very dark skin, because when they are brown they call themselves pardos. And white-skinned mixed people only call themselves white, and all these groups in the genetic tests indicate predominant Portuguese ancestry.
https://i.imgur.com/WdnJl6S.png
And to judge Brazil based on novelas is to say that in Mexico there are no mestizos, because in Mexican novels there are only blond actors. By the census, blacks and pardos are majority in Brazil and mainly Rio de Janeiro, true whites in Rio you certanly found in Leblon or rural areas. Rio de Janeiro is one of the last states where you will find pure races,IDK why some Brazilians specially in this thread likes to make such big deal about it. And when they talk about elite I even laugh, because we all know that rich people are minorities in the whole of Brazil, which only confirm that it will be hard to find someone who is pure here. Not judging you because youre not delusional. Most people I know in Rio, even those who looks white claims some black ancestry, or indigenous. Mostly because black people were almost 98% of the population before the mass immigration of Europeans.

Rio is not genetically much different from São Paulo like this genetic study suggests, it's even comparable to some parts of the southernmost fringes of Brazil and they are well within the southeastern cultural spectrum. The capital of any state and adjacent regions are always more multi-cultural as it typically receives a lot of extra-south migrations in the case of Brazil, and this is not only observable here but also in European countries like France. Areas like the interior fluminense are certainly more European than the central metropolitan areas and this is also true for São Paulo.

I think people from São Paulo scores less African than people from Rio. The reason why whites and pardos from Rio scores more black ancestry than indigenous in that genetic study is quite obvious: According to the Brazilian Census the society of Rio de Janeiro was divided among whites, blacks and mulattos. Although, nowadays you find many tri-racials around here because Northeastern immigration occurred with a strong impact on the region of Baixada Fluminense.

Actually not, Whites in the Rio seems to score even more than those from São Paulo but this can be just a variation from study to study. Also, the racial demography is pretty similar in both states so Rio is not really a outsider among others southerners-southeasterners, the exotic and heavily multi-cultural Rio image is just a strategy to attract turists like they do in Spain.

Here in Rio there is economic segregation. The rich regions are whiter than mixed and black. But you find whites in the suburbs of Rio. Most of these TV actors who are white and from Rio, did not come from Leblon or Ipanema. And to be self declared black here you gotta be really dark skinned, my sister declared herself parda to ENEM.

Former Portuguese immigrants talk about the place

This was a great thread ruined by low IQ retards in some pages... Let's bump it again with relevant information.

If I'm not mistaken the biggest Tyrolean diaspora in the world is in Brazil. Historically speaking all of the Tyrol has a shared identity and even Italian speaking people from Trentino identified more with Austria than with Italy until some decades ago.

Some of these people are likely only 1/16, 1/8 or 1/4 Tyrolean since Tyroleans intermarried with other German and Italian groups in Brazil.

The first Tyrolean colony was founded in the 19th century, in the Espírito Santo state, most were from Austrian tyrol.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1v-_aXFrJM

Other colonies followed in the 19th century, mostly in Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais states.

Then Italian-speaking Tyroleans (''Trentinos'') started to migrate, the bulk of immigration was to Espírito Santo again, São Paulo and Santa Catarina.

While the Italians that went to the South were majoritarily from Veneto and Trentino-South Tyrol, São Paulo received Italians from more diverse origins, besides Venetians there were lots of Lombardians, Campanians, and Calabrians.

Germans were mostly from present-day Rhineland-Palatinate (which encompasses the former Kingdoms of Hesse, Prussia and Bavaria), with sizable communities from Pomerania and to a lesser extent from other regions.
