View Full Version : The population of Greeks during the Byzantine Era

I've always tried to find the information of how many Greeks had lived in the Byzantine Empire before its fall but I've never been able to find any information on it. I'm wondering if there were more Greeks back then than there are now but I don't think so.

There most likely weren't, European population grew dramatically during the Industrial Revolution. :)

Going by the stats here you can tell that the population growth of the Greeks really stagnated during Ottoman rule. I'd imagine that the Greeks would have ended up to be as numerous as the Italians hadn't the Ottomans took Constantinople. I think the battle for Constantinople was as vital as Thermopylae except this time they lost.
