A poll by the daily Helsingin Sanomat shows that around one in three residents in the southern region of Uusimaa would back ceilings on the number of children of immigrant background in individual schools.

Children from immigrant families make up more than half of all pupils in some schools in the capital region, while there are other schools with none at all. The National Board of Education has urged local governments to examine the issue of achieving a better ethnic balance in schools. However, this survey found that a majority of people oppose the idea of ethnic quotas.

The biggest backers of quotas are supporters of the True Finns Party. Over 40 percent of Centre Party voters interviewed in the survey in the capital also said they would be in favour of limits. The lowest levels of support for the idea were found among supports of the Left Alliance and the Green League.

Most of Uusimaa residents still live in neighbourhoods with a neglible amount of immigrants, so its quite understandable that they do not want to "share the burden" of the sompanzee element. The True Finns of course support it because of their basically assimilationist stance towards immigrants already in the country.

Hmm... To really enforce the meaningful dissipation of the immigrant element like this, you'd have to spread them evenly round the country, and in effect forbid them from moving house (as they'd all flock to the big city). It'd take Soviet-style restrictions on movement and internal passports! Difficult problems...

That's why repatriation would be better. It's cheaper and quicker and in a sense far more humane too.
