Sephardic Jew results - confusing me!

Hi everyone,

I recently took the AncestryDNA test as well as the Gedmatch tests to further dig into my roots - however the more I do it, the more confusing it gets! Can someone help me interpret my results?
Little back story to my heritage, I am Finnish from my dad's side (not much mixing in there) and I am Israeli (more specifically Moroccan and Berber Jew from my mom's side). However, when I run tests in Gedmatch, it keeps giving me results that differ, I was wondering what is the most accurate one when you're trying to trace your Jewish roots?

You are probably not Bedouin or copt. All jews (with almost no exception) have Middle eastern DNA, Usually with most of it being Levantine. Almost all jewish groups are originated from the israelites of the levant.
As your DNA test reveals you are more than 20% middle easten (the ashkenazi jewish category already contains Middle eastern DNA so it's not only the 19%).
Gedmatch probably identify the Middle eastern DNA as Bedouin or copt. Nothing to be excited about. The 10% Iberian peninsula and the 5% Southern europe(never heard about this broad category) probably comes from your partly spanish origins of the sephardi side. I'm interested to see if I'm familiar with the surname of this side.
Anyway I think you should upload your raw data to as much calculators as possible- DNA.land, gencove, Myheritage (they actually have a reference of Moroccan sephardim, might be very useful in your case). When you get these results, upload here, or P.M me. Very interesting (:

Firstly 7.836487 is a huge distance for two pop. approximation. Not enough sufficient samples will always render a bad result for most. This is due to the way oracles work. They'll always try to find a match closest to you, so when you see

You might think that it works, but that distance is too big for 2 pop. approximation so what we see here is just lacking samples. I'm sure that north African jew + Finnish would have gotten her closer, but they don't seem to have that sample, or the sample is from a different kind of n. African jew than what she is. She also used oracles 4 which locks the percentages at 50%, I'm sure something like 70% Sicilian + 30% Finnish would have been closer.

BTW many sephardim settled among berbers after the expulsion in 1492. They aren’t necessarily converted berbers. your surnames will tell(sephardim have different surnames than converted berbers)

Both of my grandparents are dark but grandmother is definitely a bit lighter than my grandfather. No green or blue eyes. For example my moms eyes are near black lol.
So basically my ancestors from Italy, moved to Spain and then Morocco and finally Israel. Whereabouts your Berber ancestors lived? My grandfather is from the Atlas mountains.

A bit of history- all jews(except for ethiopian,yemenite and one group of Indian jews- they might be convertors) are from the levant. Kingdom of Israel and judea.

Main events:
1. First diaspora 597 BCE, the babylonian exile the jews to ancient babylon. They return after 70 years. Some stay in babylon- they are the Mizrahi jews (jews of Iraq,Iran, and West asia countries).
2.70 BCE- Jews are getting diaspora throw the Roman Empire- some go to greece (Romaniote jews), some go to North africa (Mgrahbi jews), some even go already to spain.
3. Modern theory (no one one how accurate it is)- Jews go to rome, some as slaves. They live in Italy for few decades/centuries. The men take Italian wives - first mix with europeans.
4. Somewhen the jews of Rome split- some join the communities of spain (North african jews tend to join spanish jews too), and some settle in modern France/Germany border.
5. Islam arrive to north africa and arabs take over spain for 600 years. Jews tend to prosper.
6. 1391- Huge pogroms against jews in spain, many leave(Mostly to Algeria) , many convert, many dies.
7. 1492- Christianity is all over spain again, Jews are being expelled from spain. Where do they go? Portugal, North africa (mainly to Morocco), and the Ottoman empire.
8. 1497- Jews are expelled from Portugal- Many covert to christianity by force, many escape. Some practices judaism in secret- they eventually manage to escape to Netherlands,France,Germany and UK.

That's why you can find a yugoslavian jew , a dutch jew and a moroccan jew with the same surname- they are all from spain.

Your family probably indeed went to Italy,then spain, and then morocco. They settled among the berbers in the atlas mountains like many other jews. They aren't berber. You don't have Berber DNA (unlike you I have).

About the surnames:
1. The surname Alhayani is associated with the city of Jaen in Andalusia, southern Spain
2. Hayut is also a sephardic surname. documented already in the 13th century in various locations in Central-Northern spain.

Actually my dad's side is Eastern Finn, from Karelia, which we lost in war and is now part of Russia. However, maybe before they settled there they came there from West? Hmm..very confusing!

Moroccan Jews are broad. Some look like arabs, some look more southern european, some look more SSA admix, and some are even blonde with blue eyes (pseudo baltids in some cases, alpinids in others, Iberian like types in some cases..). It depends.

Hm. Not particularly white judging by your description. Especially the Indian part. Arabs and Iranians sometimes pass as white or have light skin, but Indians almost never.
