Estonia received 33 asylum applications in 2010, which saw a 17.5 percent decrease from the previous year, according to data from the Police and Border Guard Board.

The main countries of origin of the asylum-seekers in 2010 were Afghanistan, Nigeria, Sri Lanka and Russia, the Police and Border Guard Board's press spokeswoman, Ene Vihtla, told uudised.err.ee.

Seventeen applicants were granted asylum, among them five refugees from Afghanistan, three from Sri Lanka, one from Sudan, one from Tajikistan and one from Belarus. Three Afghan and three Russian citizens received subsidiary protection.

In 2009, the number of asylum applicants was 40, of whom only three were granted asylum and one received subsidiary protection.

Since the Geneva Convention on the status of refugees took effect in Estonia in 1997, the country has granted asylum for 21 and subsidiary protection for 16 refugees. Forty-seven people have been refused asylum after review and 66 applications were rejected immediately.
