Poll: Finns give higher priority to law and order than defence of minorities

A fresh poll indicates that people in Finland want their Parliamentary candidates to promote tougher punishments for criminals.

In a survey on voter attitudes, interviewees raised the issue as the primary political goal for Parliamentary candidates. The question of more severe punishments has overtaken the protection of minority rights as a political priority.

The poll was commissioned by the Foundation for Municipal Development and conducted by TNS Gallup, and involved interviews with 1,009 people. It was taken over a period of just over a month from early September.

The poll showed that supporters of the Green League, the National Coalition Party, and the True Finns felt that politicians should promote the interests of the whole country.

Among supporters of the Social Democratic Party, the Centre Party, and the Left Alliance, promoting regional interests was of more importance.

Women were more likely than men to consider the protection of the rights of minorities as a priority.

Men felt that it was important for candidates to support the reduction of public sector spending.

The poll listed 17 different criteria for the evaluation of candidates. Ranking lowest on the list were positive attitudes toward immigration of foreign labour and support for membership in NATO.
