Recent research showing that almost half of Malaysian adults are overweight or obese—possibly the highest rate in Asia—has kicked off a flurry of consternation in the country. The prime minister’s office has asked scientists to research solutions. Nutritionists are blaming dietary staples like nasi lemak and roti. Some doctors say too many families still believe chubbiness among children is a sign they’ve been looked after well.

The problem isn’t just in Malaysia. An increasing number Asian countries are quickly gaining weight and witnessing higher rates of diabetes, hypertension, and weight-related disabilities. According to the study published in The Lancet, 44% of men aged 20 or older in Singapore are obese or overweight, about the same rate as Malaysia.

Rates are higher even among women, a trend that is seen mostly in developing countries: 54% of women aged 20 or older in the Maldives are overweight or obesity, compared to 49% of Malaysian women.

Of course, these rates still don’t compare to the US, where 62% of women and 71% of men aged 20 or older are overweight or obese. But they do mean that now, much more of the world can be classified as having serious weight problems. The percentage of adult men with a body mass index of 25 kg/m2 or more grew to 37% in 2013 from 29% in 1980, and to 38% from 30% for women.

Even more depressingly, as the authors wrote, “not only is obesity increasing, but no national success stories have been reported in the past 33 years.”

Wouldn't Samoa be among the top contenders, if you were to count them as Asian that is?

Its not really catching up.These are falsely statistics.Only Pacific Islander Asians are fat due to americanization.

The real statistics are on the WHO.Continental Asians are way fitter than the rest of the world.

This definition of Asia is probably based on what the US considers to be Asia, not the real definition of Asia. Notice how there are no West Asian countries there.

It's way higher than the BMI figures indicate. If you go by body fat you'll get something like 90% over weight.

East Asians in the USA are among the biggest consumers of fast food, and although not obese, many of them pack on weight and look oversized like other ethnic groups here.

Explosion in childhood obesity in China ‘worst ever’, expert says of new study findings

Researchers say China is paying the price of adopting a Western lifestyle and the findings are a wake-up call for Chinese policymakers to take steps to stem the trend. The 29-year study, published on April 26 in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, involved nearly 28,000 rural students from Shandong province.

One of the main reasons is because they were broke and starving under Chairman Maos regime. Now that they're prospering they'll be giving Americans a run for their money in the waist department.

Only fitter in terms of being skinny, but the workout gym culture there is pretty sad. Hasn't really taken off in the mainstream yet. But it's increasing.

I think Europe is still the "fittest" place, in terms of not being fat or too skinny, but having a decent amount of relatively in shape people who exercise.

Nah, most people there are still scrawny compared to Americans. But yeah there is fast food everywhere over there now, you do see more fat people, especially in Northern China, which is like the Midwest of China, you see a lot of people who don't have sophisticated palettes, eat junk food, drink alcohol all the time.

Obesity is scary, and such a high lever of child obesity is even scarier.
