The Daguerreotype was the first large scale commercial photographic process. Developed by Louis Daguerre together with Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, it was presented to the public in 1839. Daguerreotypes were widely produced until more refined and less labour intensive techniques such as the wet plate collodion process became predominant in the 1850s.
In 2008, all daguerreotypes in Nordiska museet's collections were re-examined by the museum's curators, photographed and packaged in custom made archival boxes as part of a project called "Early Photographic Techniques". Here you will find photographs of these fascinating cultural artifacts presented cohesively for the first time.
