Ehhh, interestingly enough Ive had some DNA tests interpret the Medeterranean as strictly MENA. The Melungeons even once put out an ad in the early 1900s asking for and I quote "good white women" to come and marry their sons so that their community wouldn't die out. Now what newspaper would put out an ad for non-whites asking to fuck white women in that century? I honestly believe they're a remnant of Spanish colonisation that failed in Appalachia.

"Researchers have theorized that Melungeons may have been a mixture of European, African and Native Americans. A DNA study in the Journal of Genetic Genealogy in 2012 found that the families historically called Melungeons are the offspring of sub-Saharan African men and white women of northern or central European origin.
Overbay said DNA testing in her family shows about 98 percent European and 2 percent African genetic background while other Melungeon families show other mixtures."

The "Melungeons" are not a singular group and the testing done was only on a few families and a few individuals from those families. The word "Melungeon" honestly cannot truly be used to describe groups like the Melungeons of Newman's Ridge, the "Cherokee" of Paint Rock, the "Cubans" of South Carolina, Turks, Moors, Portuguese, Gypsies, Guineas, etc.
This being my own DNA test I should have probably mentiond where my family is from. Several were from Appalachian Alabama, from Paint Rock Valley. Some were your basic Gibson half breed descendants from the "core" Melungeon region. Whilst some from a small self proclaimed tribe in Kentucky called the Ridgetop Shawnee and the Lenape Nation.
So were they negroes? Some were, obviously. No one is denying that some "Melungeons" were black, but no one ever suggests that there was racism in the "Melungeon" communities, if you could even call them a community. More like an unnamed, loosely governed, tribe in the hills that both hated and welcomed outsiders. It would surprise you to know that several "Melungeons" owned slaves, fought for the Confederacy as white men, and even married whites outside of their community.
There is absolutely no evidence that suggests that these families were produced wholly by intermarriage between white and black indentured servants. There is an extremely strong Iberian element that is, for whatever reason, overooked. Im guessing because its more interesting that a bunch of hicks in the hills are "black" instead of Spanish.

I suspect Melungeons have gotten whiter over time. Photos I see of them from 100 years ago showed visibly more African ancestry than those today.

You may be seeing photos of "Melungeons" from a different region and older photos really aren't the best resource. Its why many whites think their grandma was an Indian because of some old dark distorted photo. Some of my family are blonde hair and blue eyed but some look akin to Dean Martin.
