He was of Ruthenian and Moldavian origin but made himself into a true Pole by converting to Catholicism.

Ironically his main enemy, Cossack leader Bogdan Chmielnicki, was of ethnically Polish origin.

But today Chmielnicki is for Ukrainians "their hero" and Wiśniowiecki is "our hero" in Poland.
