I remember they had a strict policy of having only basque-born players (not necessarily ethnic basques). When Lizarazu was signed it was big news because he was the first foreigner, even if french basque.

Also in 80s and 90s Patxi Ferreira (from Salamanca!) and zero% ethnic Basque played there.
Ernesto Valverde (current trainer of Barsa) was born in Extremadura, he is 0% Basque and the same story.

There are more cases (Fernando LLorente, etc).
