He seemingly is trying to consolidate European power.

To buy time in order to stave off an eventual treason trial and execution. I won't be the celebrating the moment his head rolls into the sand, but I won't mourn it either.

Sorry, for not being an Euro but I have something to tell that I find important to comprehend French politics.
Don't focus too much on Macron, he is a one-shot president like his two predecessors (Sarkozy, Holllande), they put him in service to complete what the others could not do because of scandals, the worst is yet to come and I have some bad feelings on who is going to succeed him in 2022.
Just ask this guy: Jacques Attali, a French Algerian-Jewish economist, they call him in France the kingmaker.

Macron is backed by Rothschild so I look for him to be around a while.

All French presidents were backed by financial oligarchy since 1974, but some of them had too much scandals so they were pushed out to renew faces and do the same politics.
For example Hollande was forced to renounce his reelection in fall 2016 and then drained his Socialist Party to empower the LREM of Macron (his own finance minister).
Let's have a bet you and I, I am sure he won't be reelected in 2022 (in case he stood there).
