Can anyone recommend good children's TV shows, old and new, from Scandinavia, UK, France, Germany, Poland, Ukraine or Netherlands? Films also? How about one or two that stick in your mind as a child?

I have a "regionless" DVD player and have collected a fairly large collection of British, Canadian, Australian and American kids shows (Charlie and Lola, Mr. Benn, Bagpuss, The Magic Roundabout, Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit - BBC, The Big Comfy Couch, all the Shirley Temple movies, all the Little Rascals / Our Gang movies, etc).

They would be for my two daughters, ages 3 and 4...

Postman Pat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postman_Pat). A thousand times, Postman Pat!

Btw, I can only vouch for the 80s/90s ones. According to Wiki they've made some more in the 2000s (long after I stopped watching it :D), you might want to avoid those ones, probably all full of PC-crap (Beornie was saying something about his daughter watching children's television and all the multikult garbage they insert...).

Moomin, Pippi Långstrump, Ronja Rövarsdotter (my favourite movie as a kid),

Moomins you can get English, I'm not sure about the others.

There have been several highly acclaimed children's movies from Finland in recent years, but I can't give a personal opinion as I haven't seen them:

Rölli ja Metsänhenki (Rölli [=a kind of troll, children's character] and the Forest Spirit)

Wu1gJhysazo

Joulutarina (Christmas Tale)

hrt7uSLIiyk

Unna ja Nuuk (Unna and Nuuk)

There have been many more, I can make some additions later on.

We do have Pippi. I thought the Moomins were only books. Are they movies or cartoons also?

I am downloading Ronja Rövarsdotter now (with English subs). :thumb001:

I have watched many Finnish films and my wife and I always like them!!

Thanks!!

Your daughters are too young for the good stuff.

But here are some suggestions:

Emil i Lönneberga (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwSqSvMmkGA)
Kaj & Andrea (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waHIoqToeiU)
Pingu (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpSDZQwGRM0)

Don't you have a marvelous narrator of children's books in the US?
I could sit for hours and listen to this man's voice when I was a kid.

Hm, as far as french shows go, I mostly grew up on dubbed english shows, but there were a few good ones out there.

If quebec french counts, then I recommend Passe-Partout (something I watched when I was 2-4 years old) hKQtMAqK7GY

If you want shows from France (that aired on Quebec tv) then I recommend 'Billy The Cat' (Yes, the name is in english, but the show itself was in french) BfkJ9T8r1YA

Lastly, one can't forget about the classic Smurfs (or Les Schtroumpfs as they are known en francais :P) VwJKTzq_XPg

if you want to trau... uh, 'shake them up' a little them there's the classic english animated rabbit film for Kids (seriously, it's got a U rating here, not even a PG), Watership Down :D

it certainly stuck in my mind (and quite a few others)

IMDB commenters say:

Im 21, and cannot watch this.It truly freaked me out a a kid. Strange thing is, I love horror movies, they are my favourite and theres not alot I havent seen, but this animated tale about rabbits is disturbing. My vivid memory is fields turning red. Thats what does it for me I think.

I'm 28 and I just finally worked up the courage to watch it again for the first time since I was seven. Back then, I ran out of the room at the warren destruction scene, and the image of those red eyed rabbit heads swirling around has haunted me for 21 years. I hoped it would be less disturbing this time, but really, it wasn't - should have left that memory buried!
I can watch actual horror films and they don't bother me in the least; but this, I can't handle. It makes me sick to see people claiming kids should see this because "they need to learn about the world". I hope my children's world won't include mass murder with poison gas - something best learned about in seventh grade history class, not in graphic imagery shown to small children.
Desensitizing kids to this sort of thing is not exactly an admirable goal, and neither is traumatizing them.

Subject: I can't even look at a image of it.

I handled Imprint, (Yes the Masters of Horror episode) The Devil's Rejects, Plague dogs, a lot of other movies that are creepy/disturbing.

But this movie is on whole new level.
I know i sound like a total wuss but it's true.
Any picture/clip that is shown to me i'll scream. (inside) I have a little
bit of a liking to rabbits (i blame Alice in Wonderland of that)
so i guess you can imagine how i feel.

perhaps a good pairing with Peter Rabbit... muahahah :icon_twisted:

probably best wait 2-ish + years more from age 3 and 4 though, IMO ;)

Yes yes, this is it! :thumb001: Ever since I was small kid I´ve had images of this movie ingrained in my memory! Over the years I had almost completely forgotten about it only for some recollections to randomly reemerge from time to time. I guess this is one of those cases where you´re not completely sure if you really had seen something or if it was just a figment of your imagination distorted over time. But here it is once again! Shit! :D Now that I´m checking out some clips on YouTube I´m noticing that the only things I seem to recall in relative detail are the rats and assorted graphic scenes. This is really freaking me out now! What a brutal movie! In many ways scarier than "adult horror films". Thanks for sharing! Brought back a lot of memories be they pleasant or not. :p

My favorite kid show, that twisted me into the fine human being that I am today, was H.R. Pufnstuf (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.R._Pufnstuf). :D

From France, with participation of many countries from all Europe, the best children shows with an educational purpose were the Il etait une fois series, no doubt about it. At least the three first ones: Man, Space and Life.
