In Latvia most common name for babies at this moment are:
Roberts, Sofija, Gustavs, Alise, Markuss, Viktorija, Daniels, Marta

Most latvian-baltic names are:
Viesturs, Jānis, Valdis, Visvaldis, Dainis, Dzintars, Daina, Laima, Maija, Gunta

I know dozens of Jānis, Artūrs, Kaspars, Linda, Laura. I guess those names were popular in 80s and 90s

Russo doesn't mean Russian but redhead :D It's an ancient southern Italian form for "Rosso" and means the same thing of Rossi (reds, redheads). :D

Caputo meant "Big Head", form the Latin <<Caput>> (head).

It seems that Mr John Smith is very popular also in Italy (Giovanni Fabbro).

It would also be a quite common combination in Catalan lands: Joan Ferrer (or Ferré).

By some reason, the feminine form seems more common in those two languages: Herrera and Ferreira.

Russo doesn't mean Russian but redhead :D It's an ancient southern Italian form for "Rosso" and means the same thing of Rossi (reds, redheads). :D

Caputo meant "Big Head", form the Latin <<Caput>> (head).
Mine was a loose literal translation , actually we'd need an etimology for each surname, rather than a pure translation, otherwise Russo would also mean I snore.
And Caputo then could also mean "understood" in a gergal friendly manner (hai caputo?)

Ferrer is the original form (keeping the F turned H) and there are ancient castilian lineages with Ferrer.

If we say "spanish" forms, ferrer, herrera, herrero... are included. Castilian is another thing...

no, nobody connection .... is a corruption of the Latin term "Ruber - Rub(er)is", which means "red" (in italian "Rosso").

Russo means Russian only literally and according to the meaning at the present time , it's very likely that when this surname born Russo had another meaning , probably a dialectal (Southern) form of Rosso , that is Red.

At Spain (besides trends of the foreigners among us) there's an ugly but curious trend specially strong in lowest classes to pick inside a very limited set of seldom bad spelled Anglosaxon names:

1) Kevin, Joshua, Jonathan. Or Yosua, Yonatan...

2) Jessica, Samantha, Jennifer. Or Yesica, Samanta...

The weirdest thing is, I repeat, the little of the sets. Evidence of the lack of originality after that process.

Another tendency is to follow like sheeps successful serials, so, after years (and I was all right with this) of a relative downtrend on Antonio's frequency, my name has surged again to the very top due to be the name of the main character of a successful nostalgic serial.

Our two languages (Castillian and Italian) are perhaps among the few in Europe to be mutually intelligible to each other, if spoken slowly.:p

However, in recent years in Italy is increasing tendency for parents to give to the children traditional roman names, like Cesare, Augusto, Marco Aurelio, Livia, Lucrezia, Lavinia, Martina, Giulia,....etc etc.
Is a good thing, if I think the fact that foreigners are calling the children or "Mohammed" or "Mustafa" or "Hu" or "Wang" ...

I think it is a good thing, since the Unity the Italian language (before only used by nobles, intellectuals, writers, diplomatic and scientist) is increasingly common, especially under the rule of Giolitti and Mussolini.
Italy has for centuries been divided into several smaller states, but united in culture, art, philosophy, and in political thought (and also in genetics, which since 100 AD. has varied by only 8-12%, according to recent studies).

Having a single language, we overcome the internal differences and it is easier to focus on the real enemy forces, external...

Megan (Welsh)
Ffion (Welsh)
Are they Welsh? I thought Ffion was just Fiona (despite it having a meaning in Welsh as a common noun (http://www.behindthename.com/name/ffion)), and thus a popularised and garbled anglicisation of the (Scots) Gaelic inspired Fiona (http://www.behindthename.com/name/fiona).

Ah, Megan (http://www.behindthename.com/name/megan)is Welsh in so far as it follows Welsh diminutive practices, being none other than Margaret, and thus ultimately Greek. :thumb001:

Yes, or Giovanni Ferrari, or Giovanni Ferrero, or Giovanni Fabbri, etc etc :)

Jovan Kovačević is popular.

It would also be a quite common combination in Catalan lands: Joan Ferrer (or Ferré).
Shane McGowan, Evan Gough, Sean MacGovan, Ivan Kuznetsov, Ivan Kovalov and so on are not too unusual either. :p
