ATHENS – With a nearly eight-year-long economic crisis already crushing Greece with record unemployment, poverty, suicide and deprivation, the number of domestic cases grew from 2014-17, with more than 13,700 cases reported.

That has increased during the reign of the ruling Radical Left SYRIZA-led coalition which took office in January, 2015 with the promise to reverse austerity measures demaned by international lenders before adding more after Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras broke his word to protect workers, pensioners and the poor and to “Crush the Oligarchy,” but didn’t.

Last year there were 3,134 cases of domestic violence reported in Greece involving 4,243 victims, Greek Police (ELAS) spokeswoman Ioanna Rotziokou told the Athens-Macedonian news agency. “Women account for 70 percent of the victims,” she said.

Violence was verbal, physical or sexual, and was occasionally fatal. “Sometimes the tragic outcome of these domestic situations is even death, with the number of female fatalities twice that of men,” she said.

In 2013, under a different government, a study conducted by the General Secretariat for Gender Equality showed a 47% increase in cases of domestic violence against women in Greece.

At the opening ceremony of the new Women’s Support and Consultation Center in Kavala, Vaso Kollia the then-General Secretary for Gender Equality said domestic violence can come in different forms, for example financial blackmail, sexual humiliation, injuries or even rape. She said: “Violence against women is present and undeniable,” and continues.

I think that figure in Greece is quite low compared to the Islamic attacks against females in other EU states, such as Norway, Denmark, Sweden, the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, etc, (basically wherever there's a large muslim rapeugee population.)

64,500 of 215,000 violent sexual crimes recorded across EU were in England and Wales, compared with 34,300 in Germany. (Most of these brutal attacks on females are committed by muslim immigrants, because in their Islamic cultures in Iran, etc, they stone females to death if they don't wear a burka over their face.)

Not all cases are reported though, so the true figures aren't known.

3000 females were killed by their husbands in Great Britain in one year alone in so-called 'honour' killings (murder.)

Exactly. European liberals are talking out of two sides of their mouth.

On one hand, they claim to support women's rights.

On the other hand, they bend over backwards to accommodate Muslims, who don't care about or respect women's rights.

Hypocrites.

Wow, congrats you held back the strong temptation not to put blame at Albanians like you usually do when negative news are circled about Greece, well you sort of did actually xD, because I see you did toss blame on others even the article doesn't point out or link third world immigrants for increased domestic violence.

I don't put blame just to put blame, that's why this is irrelevant to Albanians.
They are involved to crimes - that's why I'm mentioning it when it happens, but the domestic abuse isn't something more or less than any other countries around here.

As for the ''blame'' in this article, well, it doesn't take a genius to understand what is happening. As lilly pointed out, Greece is "below" average compared to other EU. Not non-existant, but still.
Then, you have to search what made the increase to happen.
And guess what's the only major thing happened that collerates exactly with this dates, that can explain it.

Excuses like I said above, you never like to take the blame but if possible toss blame on others like you do right now, I'm not gonna search for anything because I know that greeks know to commit crimes too.

Of course Greeks also commit crimes. Who said that Greeks don't?
But you have to be realistic, and you have to face reality.
When crime rates drastically change , and it collerates with a big event (crisis? immigrant influx? war?) then, you get the memo who is responsible.
They aren't responsible for all crimes commited, they are responsible for this big change.
If the homicide rate is , f.e from 0.7 to 0.8 stable for many years, and suddenly you have 1.4 , when the immigrants come in hordes, then, something gives. (Numbers are an example).
