The Finnish game sensation Angry Birds has received new international spotlight as its maker Rovio Mobile struck a deal with movie corporation Twentieth Century Fox. The characters of a new 3D movie from the makers of Ice Age will adventure alongside Angry Birds in a new version of the game.
The game’s creator Rovio Mobile and Fox will show their advertisement to the American public at one of the biggest televised events in the US, the Super Bowl.
“Not just any firm of our size gets a Super Bowl advertisement or goes into such visible cooperation with so big a player as Fox, so yes, there is a certain status in that,” says Rovio Mobile CEO Mikael Hed.
Rovio has already outgrown its premises twice. The current ones are new as of last August, but now they are getting too small. A new move is on the horizon as the firm expands. Employees are in short supply, so the company has set up training for programmers.
“There are about 1,200 people working in the games industry in Finland and, at this stage, when we recruit dozens of them, this is already quite a high percentage,” Hed says.
It is impossible to predict what will become a hit in the games world and the danger lurks to become a one hit wonder. However, there are no such concerns at Rovio. Angry Birds will be released this year as video game consoles and the brand is to have its own film, a TV series and spin-off products.
Angry Birds was the top paid iPhone application in some 60 countries including the US and the UK in 2010.
