To become teacher in Italy you must make the curse of studies of the subject that you want to teach (for exemple, you need to be mathematician to teach mathes, having a degree in mathes; a degree in English to become teacher of English, a degree in Modern Literature to become a teacher of Italian and so on), then you must make an abilitation, then you have to make a public test and the ones who have the highest scores start with temporary teaching jobs in the regions for which they have given their disponibility.
Then, after a decade maybe you find a permanent job as teacher, and at that point you are considered a sort of intellectual, students must call you "Professor" and use the form of cortesy to talk with you, they also have to stand up when you are entering in a class.

But it is a long way...

We have similar guidelines and protocol for teachers of middle and high school levels. Some states have more stringent teaching requirements than others.
One good thing here, is that teachers can get their federal student loans forgiven if they decide to work in a low income/needy district.

Teachers & Accountants, from what I have seen, the supply far outstrips the demand, both from reading news articles and talking to friends. Nursing & Truck Drivers appears to be the most in-demand from what I have seen, I'm surprised to see nothing from the medical field on that list seeing as how it makes up 1/7 of our economy and growing fast.
