A huge police operation is underway in central Belgrade to keep the peace as up to 50,000 people take to the streets in an anti-government protest.

Thousands of police officers have surrounded government buildings, blocked streets and closed major thoroughfares around central Belgrade, Serbia, on Saturday as a major rally by the opposition Serbian Progressive Party takes place.

Party leader Tomislav Nikolic has promised the event will pass peacefully, but concerns have been raised that violence could flare after it emerged that around 1,500 football fans could attempt to disrupt the march in protest at sentences handed down to their fellow supporters for the murder of a French man before a match in the Serbian capital.

The SNS, Serbia’s main opposition party, is calling for early elections because of the “poor state of the country”, party president Nikolic has explained.

On Friday, Nikolic said that Saturday’s protest will be the biggest and most peaceful ever held in the capital.
