A Slovak investigative journalist and his partner have been murdered in a suspected assassination linked to the journalist's work.

Jan Kuciak, 27, and Martina Kusnirova were shot dead at the weekend at home in Velka Maca, a village 65km (40 miles) east of the capital Bratislava.

It was "most likely related to the journalist's investigative work", a police commander said.

Kuciak had written about alleged tax fraud involving luxury apartments.

There were protests last year over Interior Minister Robert Kalinak's alleged business dealings with a property developer. The minister denied wrongdoing and an investigation into suspected fraud was dropped.

The killings prompted Prime Minister Robert Fico to convene an emergency meeting with security chiefs, including Mr Kalinak.

"If it is proven that the death of the investigative reporter was connected with his journalistic work it would be an unprecedented attack on freedom of speech and democracy in Slovakia," Mr Fico said.

Like other ex-communist countries, Slovakia enacted far-reaching law and justice reforms in order to qualify for EU membership.

Contract killings linked to corruption investigations are relatively rare in Central Europe.

Kuciak had been working for Aktuality.sk, an online unit of Swiss and German-owned publisher Ringier Axel Springer, for three years.

"We are shocked and stunned about the news that Jan Kuciak and his companion obviously have been the victims of a cruel assassination," Ringier Axel Springer Slovakia said.

The company said that if the double murder was meant to deter people from exposing wrongdoing, they would redouble their journalistic efforts.

Italians arrested over murder of Slovak journalist

By EUOBSERVER

Police in eastern Slovakia arrested on Thursday several Italians in a search for the killer of journalist Jan Kuciak and his girlfriend. Kuciak was investigating possible links between the mafia and Slovakia's political elite - in particular the Italian Vadala family and its alleged ties with the international crime syndicate of Calabrian origin, 'Ndrangheta. The Vadala family ran an agricultural empire that yielded them EU farming subsidies.

English version of the last, unfinished text by murdered journalist Jan Kuciak about Italian mafia in Slovakia ran this morning on Aktuality.sk Read the English version here:

Italian mafia in Slovakia. Tentacles reaching out to politics

The Slovak Spectator brings the English translation of the last story the murdered journalist Ján Kuciak worked on with the agreement of the Aktuality.sk editorial office.

28. Feb 2018 at 10:37 Aktuality.sk

This is the latest report by our colleague Ján Kuciak. The very last topic he worked on. He could not finish the article and publish it himself because he and his partner Martina Kušnírová had been murdered.

Aktuality.sk in cooperation with the Czech investigative journalism research center Investigace.cz, the journalist organization Investigative project of Italy and the international consortium of investigative centers Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project have mapped how people close to ‘Ndrangheta have settled in Slovakia.

Fourteen years ago an Italian named Carmine Cinnante arrived in the town of Michalovce. One morning he started in his Fiat from a village of Novosad, about 40 kilometers far from Michalovce, where he was staying with his girlfriend Lýdia.

Cinnante was heading for Italy. He was joined by a Slovakian man called Ján whom he had promised to find work there. In the Michalovce district every fourth person of working age was unemployed at that time.

When the couple was driving on a field road, approaching the main road between the villages of Porostov and Ostrov in the Sobrance district, they noticed a police patrol. Their white Fiat Punto with Italian registration plates began to reverse suddenly.

The policeman became suspicious of the men’s behavior, they stopped the car and checked in. On the back seat they found a black wooden briefcase with a gun, 50 bullets and a magazine.

It was a functional Czechoslovak machine gun model 26 with a laser pointer but with destroyed production number.

According to experts, the briefcase was made especially for storing the machine gun. Cinnante was accused of criminal possession of a weapon, and the judge of the district court in Michalovce has sentenced him to two years on probation.

At that time the prosecutor addressed the Italian as an „entrepreneur with business in Slovakia in the field of agriculture“.

Brighton Beach in New York is far from Russia but all the Russian mafia were pretty active in the past at this place. The Mexican cartel are active in London or Netherlands. Balkan mafia are active in Canada, Australia etc.. Mafias have no borders.

As long as there isnt a strong criminal organization in place and there is a profit to be made there will be one that will try to move in. Slovakia isn't that far from Italy.

Now I think about it. There was a great deal of gun running in the 90s by Italian mobsters into the Balkans and some mafia groups were able to buy agricultural land with the profits to set up fronts.

Why would the Italian mafia be active in Slovakia?
because over the last twenty years all resources and land is being sold by our corrupt government to companies from abroad..

Borgias who were of Spanish origin. Sometimes we are even good to import them.

'Ndrangheta or not, and I do not deny that they can be the instigators of the murder, but apparently some Slovak politicians are also involved in this crime story.

Glad to see (after being offline for months) that this forum isn't changed, it is still the same rathole filled with kids with no life.

If they paid them and your police accepted the money means they are corrupted :) like your government (probably the true responsible for the killings)

Demographics
See also: Demographics of Brooklyn

As of 1983, Brighton Beach had a middle class, mostly Jewish, older population. 27% of Brighton Beach was of age 62 or older, while the national average of persons aged 62 or older was 13.9%.[23] Since the 1990s, however, the neighborhood's ethnic demographics have been changing, with a large influx of mainly Muslim immigrants from Central Asia, such as Uzbeks.[16] In subsequent years, the proportion of whites leveled out, the proportion of the black population decreased significantly, and the proportion of the Asian population increased to 14% as of 2014.[24] As of 2010, increasing numbers of Muslim Central Asians were moving into Brighton Beach, and based on the historic Soviet influence over these area, these immigrants also speak Russian.[16][25]

According to the United States Census report of 2010, Brighton Beach and Coney Island, combined, had 111,063 residents as of 2009.[26] In that year, the median age of residents of Brooklyn was 34.2 and in New York City as a whole, it was 36.0 years, while in the combined Brighton Beach and Coney Island area it was 47.9 years.[26] hence, the area is distinguished by a higher median age of its population. As DiNapoli and Bleiwas note in a city report, "the number of residents aged 65 years and older in [this area] rose by 4.1 percent, so that senior citizens accounted for more than one-quarter of the area’s population" at that date.[26] According to the census, the population density in Brighton Beach, per se (52,109 people per square mile), was almost twice the average population density of New York City (27,012 people per square mile), though the average household size was 2.1 people, lower than the city average of 2.6 people. The average income of households in the area was $36,574, while the average income in the whole city was $55,217, according to the 2010 census.[27] In Brighton Beach, 21% of the population lives below the poverty line,[24] compared to only 15.4% citywide.[28]

Most of the population of Brighton Beach are immigrants. Less than a quarter (23.3%) of Brighton Beach residents were born in the United States, and nearly three-quarters were born abroad (72.9%). Because of this, English language proficiency in Brighton Beach is lower than the city average. More than a third (36.1%) of the population of Brighton Beach does not speak or understand English, while citywide, only one in fourteen people (7.2%) cannot speak or understand English.[26]

Based on data from the 2010 United States Census, the population of Brighton Beach was 35,547, an increase of 303 (0.9%) from the 35,244 counted in 2000. Covering an area of 393.32 acres (159.17 ha), the neighborhood had a population density of 90.4 inhabitants per acre (57,900/sq mi; 22,300/km2).[1]

The racial makeup of the neighborhood was 69.7% (24,774) White, 1.0% (352) African American, 0.2% (61) Native American, 12.9% (4,580) Asian, 0.0% (10) Pacific Islander, 0.4% (139) from other races, and 1.2% (442) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 14.6% (5,189) of the population.[29]

Many people have gotten angry here when I said a lot of criminal activities/pathological phenomenons (corruption, gambling, pornography, no need to speak about "dishonest" business activities in all business sectors, etc.) in the former Eastern Block are organised/committed by "criminals" from the former Western Block. This case is only another example of it.
