What is the base for the Greek classification for MyHeritage? The reason I ask is because someone commented on a Youtube video that it also covers ancestry from other areas outside of Greece

The people I see scoring the most of it are Albanians, Peloponnesians, and Cretans. Think of it as "indigenous south Balkan" really.

I guess these results need to be tempered by Gedmatch results. For example, I have seen Cypriot results with over 50% Greek in MyHeritage but on Gedmatch results Greece is hardly ever in the top 5

Right, so in relation to what I said in Mongrel's thread, Central Greek seems to be different than the other regions. It always seems to come up first for Greek-influenced populations outside of mainland Greece. Is this solely due to this region having less South Balkan ancestry or is it also in combination with some other ancestry?
I seem to recall that central Greece also has the highest frequency of E-V13, if that means anything in the grand scheme of things

I think it is not an entirely mainland sample and also includes some islands like Sporades, North Aegean, etc along with Athens. But yes, central Greece has less Slavic ancestry than the rest of the mainland, except if you include places like Tsakonia.

I don't doubt that, but they also get East Sicilian which you say is close to mainland Greeks because of Slavic ancestry. So the fact they are close to both is strange

The ratio of components can do this. These people seem quite West Asian/North African shifted too though.
mongrel posted his Cretan grandfather's result, and he is close on one calculator to both Cretans and Macedonian Greeks, and further from Sicilians, which also makes no sense. It's just the ratios of components.

My Heritage is bullshit.
I get more Italian ancestry than these Sicilian people.

i guess this is neolithic balkanic heritage which cannot be modeled as either Greek or Balkan.

I have no idea, but I have never seen someone from the Balkans to get that high percent of Italian as me...
I have some Vlach-Megleonite ancestry but even if those people were mixed with Romans, I doubt that the autosomal dna could have been preserved up to modern days.
By the way, when I upload from FTDNA I get slightly different results but nevertheless, the Italian component is still big...

how i see it is, you're high in Balkan neolithic and low in West Asian and your south euro cannot show as Greek(high Neolithic, high West Asian). So instead it shows as Italian. The vlach could be an explanation too but even vlachs are not that roman-admixed imo.

"Italian" on Myheritage is based on North Italy and Tuscany, to the best of my knowledge, which is why many Sicilians do not show it very highly and instead score Greek.

So this means that the difference between Crete and Sicily has a lot to do with the North African in Sicily.

GEDMatch shows the same, that the primary difference between Sicily and Crete is related to North African input in the former.
