Her mom was Protestant. Her dad left the family when she was young. So that is likely referring to her mom's side.

Yeah, that makes sense. Also, there are people of mixed Protestant and Irish Catholic descent who are Protestant, such as myself.

I always had thought of her as possibly being part Italian.

Looks and genetics can be a funny thing though.
For instance Robert DeNiro is roughly 1/4 Italian but he was often thought of as an Italian American due to his appearance and many roles he played as Italian American in several films.
