View Full Version : An interesting observation among Acadian genetics

Of all the Acadians I share with on 23andme, I've noticed that their are not very many Y-DNA haplogroups:

The vast majority are R1b, with only two people not being that, one is J2, the other is I2.

For mtDNA, though, it's a completely different story, you find many:

* H
* H1
* H2
* H3
* H5
* H7
* HV9
* I1
* I5a1
* J1
* J2
* K2b
* T1
* T2
* U3
* U5
* X

The only ones that appear in more than one person are H1 and U5.

I found this kind of interesting, though I don't know enough about genetics to know what this means.

Are Acadian men horn-dogs? :D

I wonder if its just because not a whole lot of Acadians have taken the 23andme test? I seem to remember there being loads of y-DNA haplogroups on the Acadian FTDNA project.

It's not that unusual. The same can be said for most places; there are only a few dominant Y haplogroups but many mtDNA ones. If I had access to haplomaps, I'd post them.

Of all Norwegians I seem to carry the most exotic/rare mtDNA Haplogroup

mtDNA of Norwegians

* H13a1a1a
* H1b - 2
* H1c
* H2a2a
* H2a5
* H6a1 - 2
* I4
* J2b1a
* N1a1(myself, errorously N1a'e'I on 23andMe)
* U5b1b1 - 2
* U5b1b1a
* V2

mtDNA of Swedes

* H13a1a
* H1a - 2
* I4
* N1b1
* W3a

Well apparently, U5 is a very rare haplogroup worldwide but of the Acadians I share with, it is the most frequent.

Rare... but not that rare:)

Approximately 11% of total Europeans and 10% of European-Americans are in haplogroup U5.

N1a is a rare haplogroup that currently appears in only 0.2% of European populations
