View Full Version : Mizrahi and Sephardi MyHeritage results + GEDmatch
Uploaded my raw dna data from FTDNA to MyHeritage.

Other 3.9% is broken down as 3% Ashkenazi and 0.9% Nigerian.
Sephardic score is too high again, assuming my known ancestry is correct. Only one grandparent is Sephardi, when I saw a similar Sephardi score on Family Finder (42%) I thought it just grouped some of my Mizrahi heritage as Sephardic, but it's consistent with this test as well so it raises a question mark...
Do you think the MyHeritage algorithm is reliable enough to base assumptions on these results?

No Italian, interesting. A lot of Jews score it.

Yeah I thought I'd get some as well, based on other people's results. Btw I can't answer PMs yet but I put my input into what you sent me, although I'm no proffesional.

Passover is just around the corner so we might as well.

Interesting is that in Brazil, there are two types of north african jews: a ladino speaker with origin in Iberian jews that fled to North Africa and other that was there much before sephardic arrived, probable from phoenician times. I never know how to name the last.
They are called 'Maghrebi Jews' (Maghreb meaning west in arabic referring to the North African countries western of Egypt), but I don't know if they are even considered a different distinct group, rather a part of what makes up current day Sephardis from North Africa? To be perfectly honest though I only fairly recently learned there even was Jewish settlement in North Africa prior to the Spanish Expulsion.

Is the the results of a Mizrahi Jew? Looks very similar to mine.

Interesting, didn't know Jews in the diaspora revolted as well, thanks for sharing.

I wouldn't take it seriously, it's a glitch for certain since literally everyone scores it.
Is the the results of a Mizrahi Jew? Looks very similar to mine.
I'm 1/4 Sephardi and 3/4 Mizrahi (Mountain Jewish and Yemenite Jewish), unless these autosomal results are somehow true in which case some of my Mizrahi ancestors are actually Sephardi lol. But I think it just has a hard time differentiating between the Sephardi and Mizrahi ancestry rather than me having this actual amount of Sephardi.
Anyway, can you share your GEDmatch results? I'm interested to see.

Cool man. You seem to score slightly more SSA than me on the calculators I ran it through but other than that very similar. You score a lot of Jewish in the several populations modes which is cool, too.

Very Lebanese. Where were your parents born?
Both my parents are Jewish. My dad is half Sephardi Jewish and half Yemenite Jewish born in Israel and my mom is Mountain Jewish from Dagestan. But Lebanese and Jews are very closely related so it doesn't surprise me it came out quite Lebanese, there's even this Lebanese girl (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mb5GTsFJqGs&t=382s) that scored very high amounts of Jewish on MyHeritage and I think it's safe to assume it's not actual recent Jewish ancestry, rather just evidence of our genetic affinity.

Lots of Jewish again. What did your autosomal results look like in the commercial test you took? Very interested to see.
The 3 populations approximation is really close to me just swap the Egyptian with Yemenite Jewish. ;)

Yes, of course. I didn't mean you're not Jewish. Actually you appear to be closer to the Levantine natives than the Ashkenazim.

Looks like your Circassian side was already mixed with Arabs. Full Adyghe people score around 20% Baltic/N. Atlantic combined. You are only 4%. Even the oracle doesn't model you as 50%, only as 25% Adyghe.

Myheritage reference is North African Jews in general, not nescerly sephardim, it includes Berber Jews as well. Ftdna reference is Turkush Jews and Greek jews from the USA which should be Sephardic Proper. Gedmatch result similar to a full Mizrahi result. Quart sephardi sounds reasonable.

Seems like Mizrahi Jews are almost pure levantine and that the original Jews were very similar to modern day Syrians and lebanese. very interesting!

They are more Anatolian/Armenian like. My paternal side seem close to Caucasian Jews and Anatolians, so they are outliers. They also have Balkar ancestry. I am also more northern than the pure Bedouins. I don't think my paternal side is mixed with Arabs, as that would push them very South, perhaps levantine but I doubt it. Usually I get a large dose of Armenian or Turkish with some oracles and the McDonald plots. Plus if Russian cherkess are in Russia would they not be Russian admix? It's true that Cherkess in the diaspora often took local wives, which created unique phenotypes among them. My cherkess line lived in Turkey and still some of them live in the Kavkaz.

The 3 populations approximation is really close to me just swap the Egyptian with Yemenite Jewish. ;)

this is a very interesting thread. I am awaiting my dna results from 23andme and ancestry so I will post them here once i get them.

Funny because I score almost exactly the same amount of Sephardi on both tests although you're suggesting two different reference populations were used. Also my Sephardi is from Libya and I didn't score any seperate North African on Family Finder so it's interesting...
Yes, of course. I didn't mean you're not Jewish. Actually you appear to be closer to the Levantine natives than the Ashkenazim.
Yeah sure I was just making it clear. That being said, my mother is very often being mistaken (by both Jews and Arabs) for Arab.
Here's my FTDNA myOrigins results:

Is your mother Yemenite Jewish? I cluster with these people quite close since they cluster with Southern Levantines and Saudis.

Uploaded my raw dna data from FTDNA to MyHeritage.
https://i.imgur.com/CXoRDlM.png
Other 3.9% is broken down as 3% Ashkenazi and 0.9% Nigerian.
Sephardic score is too high again, assuming my known ancestry is correct. Only one grandparent is Sephardi, when I saw a similar Sephardi score on Family Finder (42%) I thought it just grouped some of my Mizrahi heritage as Sephardic, but it's consistent with this test as well so it raises a question mark...
Do you think the MyHeritage algorithm is reliable enough to base assumptions on these results?
Where do you live? In Israel? How long it took you till your dna arrived at the texas laboratory?

Nope my mother is Mountain Jewish

Sephardi from Libya? That's kind of unique. Few are the sephardic families that arrived to Libya. In North Africa Most went to Morocco/Algeria, much less to Tunisia (even than usually throw Italy) and almost non to Libya.
I score 12% Sephardic on FTDNA lol. On gedmatch I'm typical Sephardic that plot with Sicilians and South Italians.
I find FTDNA and Myheritage inaccurate. Try to upload to Gencove and DNA.land and other things

I wouldn't necessarily say inaccurate but it's just that I wouldn't take them too literally. Like in Toppo's case he clearly doesn't have a Sephardi grandparent but he is very closely related to Jews so it showes up like this.
I don't know if I'd call DNA.LAND very accurate either because it lumps together a whole verity of ethnicities into each one category plus the weird lumping of Ashkenazi/Levantine with Mediterranean Islanders but here are my results:

I think he doesn't identify as white. He is a race realist (you don't have to be white to acknowledge genetic differences and their importance) and he regrets the Islamization and Arabization of the Levant. Also, he has strong anti-Jewish sentiments for apparent reasons.

OWD doesn't strictly means that someone identifies him/herself with Whites. In can also means trying to associate him/herself with Europeans due to complex and so on. No, he was never really attacked them head on until recently due on the fact that they didn't accepted him when he showed his genetic ancestry to them. As for the whole Islamization and Arabization phenomenon in the Levant. While I do agree that I don't like Islam and all that, but at the same time, I'm not ashamed to be an Arab either, and Arabs had existed LONG before the rise of the three Abrahamic religions. Remember, the Arabian admixture among Palestinians is between 20 to 30% on average which is not insignificant in anyway, and we're genetically more closer to our neighbors in the Levant, Egypt and Arabia than to West Asiatics and Europeans as a whole. There's nothing wrong with that of course.

Well yeah that gives it away I think it's clearly an indication. But either way based on your results solely it's hard to deny you have clear Jewish ancestry. Do you happen to know when the conversion/arabisation occurred? Because you do know about your affiliation to the Levi clan so I imagine it's fairly recent?

A lot of Mountain/Kurdish/Iraqi Jews are darker skinned and carry arabid traits even though they're more northern shifted so your phenotype doesn't necessarily contradict your genotype.

Yemeni Jews are pure Southern Arabians, Mountain Jews are morstly Mesopotamian in origin, and Sephardi is half European. You probably don't have much actual native Levantine ancestry.

A lot of Mountain/Kurdish/Iraqi Jews are darker skinned and carry arabid traits even though they're more northern shifted so your phenotype doesn't necessarily contradict your genotype.
I see interesting, yeah there are some dark people in the paternal side of the family, but they are mostly light and very Caucasus looking, some have blue eyes, blond hair, and some even red. It could be that they were Jewish originally who converted and assimilated into the Cherkess identity, since they are outliers. They also have some Balkar, but for the most part they seem Mountain Jewish or Armenian like. We don't know due to the Russian conquest of 150 years ago. Yes Circassian Jews are mostly dark skinned and easily recognizable compared to their Circassian Adyghe or Karbadian neighbours. I am etty close to Caucasus and Kurdish Jews, as well Assyrians. It could be because of mixture which is Caucasian on the paternal line, but Iraqi Bedouin on the maternal line which makes go there. It's quite interesting that I am more north shifted as such.
Any of you tried Gencove? What's your opinion on it? Haven't tried it yet.
No I have not.

Yemenite Jews are very close to other Arabians especially ethnic Saudis, Bedouins, and isolated Bedouin Iraqi tribes.

Interesting. I would upload my results to MyHeritage if I were you since they have a specific cluster for Mizrahi, so if you have actual Mountain Jewish ancestry it should show up.

Sure it shows Assyrian in the single population approximation, which is Mesopotamian, but they are not a single population, they have been living in diaspora for thousands of years thus have foreign admixute.

To be honest I'm not sure Yemenite Jews are homogeneous enough for them to all cluster together with a single population, some might be more South Arabian like and others might be more Central or Northern Arabian like.
A good example would be these 3 Yemenite Jews, Margalit Tsanani, very east african influenced. Itay Levi, Arabian/Levantine looking and Eitan Cabel who is very Levatine looking.

A handful of North African Jews are pre-Sephardim, like the Djerbans, but I think it's a Sephardic reference.

Most likely from the Ottoman period considering that my paternal ancestors fled Haifa around more than 300 years ago to Acre or something. I mean, even my paternal grandfather, who was born in the village of Al-Kwikat in February 12th, 1900, didn't even know what the word "Lafy" means until a Jewish member here clarified it to me that it an Arabized name from the Jewish name "Levy".

He is just a laughing stock, wanting Jewish and European acceptance. There is nothing about him being a real realist or whatever term, he just wanted to appeal to Whites, so they can roll the red carpet for him in his head, just like he thought that Jews were going to accept him. One should accept the reality and be proud of what he or she is. He only made a fool out of himself

Some people suffer from a colonial mentality and plus want the perks of being White or Jewish. Honestly neither Jews or Whites are going to accept him. He looks what the Arab stereotypical face especially in the America's. Since Levantines are the Arab majority here, not us Gulf/Bedouin types lol. Here not even Armenians are seen as White they are much fairer than he is. He only began talking about race realism, not because he believes it, but because he wants to appeal to some of the racialist/racist Whites. Though the funniest thing after his dna shows him to have North African/Berber shift he still looks down on them, and then went to several Jewish temples/synagogues thinking they might accept him, and they must have laughed their asses off. True. Berbers and their Arabized counterparts are really good people, and honestly, I'd feel guilty if I ever had ill thoughts against them. I mean, the Maghreb treats very well and our relations with them are very friendly as well. It's not like say our relations with the Lebanese for example. Again, I don't judge an individual or a group of people based on their nationality or whatever but rather by their deeds and virtues.

Randomguy1235 is very delusional. He also forgets that Iraq was the strongest supporter of the Palestinian cause, which is why the Anglo-Americans waged the war against it in 2003. Not to mention Iraqis are largely of Arabian descent. He just looks down on Berbers, Arabians and others because they are darker, and in his mind he is a White guy. That what it really boils down to. He also used to look down on Iraqis

The original North African Jews lack of the European DNA that Sephardim have. There is a difference between Sephardic from the religious perspective ( every non Yemenite and non Ashkenazi Jewish)- by this definition even Ethiopian Jews are Sephardic. That's why in Israel people think Sephardi and Mizrahi is the same. Ethnic Sephardi is a Jewish who is descendant to the communities of Iberia (Arrived mostly to the Balkans and Coastal North West Africa).

Your DNA results are consistent with mostly levantine/West Asian DNA results. I'm pretty sure you are not that mixed Very low European and I have seen non Beber Admix. Almost pre-diaspora results. Very cool! Judging you gedmatch results I would say you North African Admix isn't fully Sephardic but rather original levantine Jews settled in North Africa with some sephardic, only your yemenite side is really mixed but overall you are very similar to the original Jews from the levant. Only I'm super mixed :(

I see. So you think the Yemenite is the only major foreign admixture? Funnily MyHeritage didn't pick up any of that Yemenite even though they have a Yemenite Jewish cluster.
I might upload some pictures to the Taxonomy section in the future so you'd have to see whether I fit into your image of the original Jews lol. ;) Also there's nothing wrong with being mixed.

A lot are mixed. But there is still Racism between Ashkenazi Jews and Sephardi and Mizrahi Jews so in some areas of "Ashkenazi supremacy" there is less mixing. Ethiopian and Indian Jews Are almost never mixed yet.
I'm for people to be with who they like. If I'll ever get married I don't want to be with a Jew
I wouldn't call it racism since we're all essentially the same race, prejudice would be more fitting... But either way I personally find it hard to agree. As a full Mizrahi with an Arab surname I can tell you I've never been discriminated against.
I think the Ashkenazim are simply more intelligent (and therefore better educated) on average, hence superior in a way.
Well I don't know about that, I don't sense any kind of Ashkenazi supremacy. I think it's just an excuse for non Ashkenazis to have someone to blame for their problems.
Anyway, Gencove results are in. Similar to DNA.land. I wonder if it's similar to what I would have gotten if I took the AncestryDNA test (East Med swapped with South Europe/Italy-Greece).

Funny enough Sephardim and Mizrahim (Including my self- with the highest grades in my entire school and I was offered to finish a B.S by 17 but I refused) are getting the highest scores in tests in my school. Even more funny a Mizrahi girl from my school is already part of a research in the university for curing cancer and she finished math 3 years before everyone. My uncles are professors and my great uncle (first generation in Israel didn't have money to eat back then) finished his B.S at 17!
The only difference between Ashkenazi and Mizrahi is the education they had in the diaspora. I refuse to believe there is a genetic intelligence difference.

I'm not saying those stats are 100% correct, but obviously blacks are the lowest in terms of IQ. Look at basically every black-majority country be it Nigeria, Zimbabwe or Haiti.
Ethiopian Jews are basically Ethiopians who follow Judaism, nothing more. Ethiopia despite having been a European colony only briefly is also very underdeveloped.

I will repeat my words again- IQ tests are objectively influenced from your former educational level. I don't care if it was planned to be 100% neutral test. You will hear about Sephardim and Mizrahim doing changes in the world (I hope I'll be one of them) . It will just take some time because only in this generation educational differences are starting to disappear.

Well, I do agree that Sephardim may not be significantly different from Ashkenazim. Actually, I'm clueless about their average IQ. It's still probably over 90. Israel's average IQ is reported to be around 95%. Don't know whether they included non-Jews in the average. Christian Arabs in Israel are supposedly successful in terms of education.

I still refuse to believe it is a genetic based. I believe it is environmental depended.
With my "lowe IQ" I am the one helping Ashkenazim from my class with math ( As I finished highschool math by my own in 9th grade without any difficulty) and not vise versa.

95 is the average IQ of certain European countries particularly in the Balkans and 105 is actually an East Asian level. Anyway, the average IQ of a certain group does not mean everyone in that group is the same. There are very intelligent blacks and dumb Asians and whites too, of course.

Anyway, this site has not been very accurate for me, particularly with Sephardic and Mizrakhi ancestry.
Probably pre-Sephardic, unless they came from Italy. Probably why you score so highly, I imagine European Sephardim like me will have some of their score subsumed into the Ashkenazi reference.
Probably why I score so highly on what component?

FTDNA or MyHreitage?
He took a DNA test and apparently he is 20% Turkish if I remember correctly. His family mixed during the Ottoman Empire periods. Some Yemenite Jews are very Light due to colonialistic Admix (British/Turkish).
Also I wanted to say something about it but forgot.
The Asia Minor cluster does not necessarily indicate Turkish Ancestry. It's equivalent to "Caucasus" on Ancestry or "West Asian" on MyHeritage, which is part of the make up of Levantines. So if anything it probably indicates his Levantine roots more than anything else (in addition to the West Middle East cluster). But then again you can't know for sure.

FTDNA gave me 90% Ashkenazi (too high), 5% Sephardi (too low), 3% SE Europe (fictional), and trace Native American (fictional), North Africa (fictional), and Middle East (too low).
I uploaded Ancestry and 23andme to MyHeritage for free and they gave me super bizarre results (like 10% Welsh, for example) but the one I actually bought from them was not that bad, but still wrong.
93.3% Ashkenazi (too high), 5.8% Middle East (about correct), 0.9% Native American (fictional).
23andme is much better.

It depends, for people from West Asia it's kinda useless because it groups everything from as north as the Caucasus to as south as Arabia together under "Middle Eastern."
Although there's this new update now, but we have yet to see if it's any good.

Give it the time and the necessity, anybody would be able to do it, and if you couldn't you would die anyway, so only those who could do it would be there to acknowledge that fact.
But it's true certain type of intelligences will be naturally selected in this case, mostly spatial and situational.

Phoenician Jews in the Americas? That reminds me of the Afrocentric theories that sub-Saharan Africans discovered the Americas at some point around 1500 BC and that they built the Olmec heads and Aztec pyramids.
Even the claim about the Phoenicians rounding the Cape of Good Hope isn't taken that seriously by historians. But that is far more believable than the idea that the Phoenicians settled America.

I score Ashkenazi too on some calculators, assuming it comes from my Greek Sephardi and my Amsterdamer Sephardi (converters returned to Judaism) more distant sides. In Gedmatch plots I'm closer to Balkan Sephardim than to Algerian/Tunisian Jews, which is interesting. On some PCA plots im in the place of half AJ half SJ hahaha

Can somebody provide some Ashkenazi samples? I've heard it claimed on here that Ashkenazi Jews have 1%+ SSA. Honestly I'd like to see that with my own eyes. I am rather skeptical of that claim.
I'm relatively certain that the SSA in Sephardi comes from mixing with Berbers after they were expelled from Spain. And I'm inclined to think that any rare SSA in Ashkenazis would come through mixing with Sephardis.

Interesting, jew migration to Amazonia was almost a male only migration, then most cannot be considered jews just after the first generation.

Yup, I'm descendant to a woman (my GGGG mother) that stayed in Morocco while all of her siblings (and other families) went to the Amazonas. I'm related to a person who was very important person in community of Manaus. They are ladino speakers that pray in the Sephardic synagogue.

Probably because of less Sephardic admix, and more Megrhabi Jewish admix, but he does have some European tendencies in his DNA test, don't forget he is also 3/4 Mizrahi and Yemenite Jews (while Yemenite Jews are almost identical to Arabs genetically and Mizrahim to Levantines and West Asians).

Interesting is that in Brazil, there are two types of north african jews: a ladino speaker with origin in Iberian jews that fled to North Africa and other that was there much before sephardic arrived, probable from phoenician times. I never know how to name the last.
In Morocco there were 2 groups : The Tohavim (local Megrahbi Jews that settled in North Africa since first temple days) and the Megorashim (Sephardim that came from Iberia and Southern Italy in the 15-16th centuries). They lived separately, prayed in different synagogues and spoke different languages until the 18th century. About that time they started to mix with each other and had an agreement - Everyone would speak Judeo-Arabic but everyone will take the Sephardic liturgy. Since then most of the Moroccan Jews are hybrids of Sephardim and Megrahbi Jews, exceptions are the far south of Morocco where they are almost pure Megrahbi Jews (Sephardim almost never arrived to the far south) and the far north (Tangier-Tetouan area) where most of the Jews in these communities are pure Sephardim that still speak Ladino/modern Spanish (in Israel they are stereotyped of being the white Moroccan Jews, which is sometimes true).
When these 2 groups Jews went to Brazil, it was before they mixed, and because of that you would still find today these 2 communities living in separate, speaking 2 different languages, and praying in 2 different types of synagogues.
BTW In Israel the same thing happened with the Mizrahim- they adopted they Sephardic liturgy and therefore there are only 3 types of Synagogues- Sephardic (for Sephardim,Mizrahim and Indian and Ethiopian Jews), Ashkenazi one and Yemenite one. That's why sometimes the term Sephardic includes all non Ashkenazi types of Jews, even if historically and genetically that's not true (and I hate it when Persian Jews or Iraqi Jews consider themselves "Iberian Jews".) In Israel many times the Sephardic Rabbi isn't really Sephardic, but Mizrahi - but I don't care about it.

Longbowman is right. Sephardim didn't mix directly with Berbers.
Berber DNA among Sephardim is due to mixing with Megrahbi Jews that moved to Spain during the muslim era, or with megrahbi Jews in North Africa, for those that arrived over there after the expulsion.
Megrhbi Jews mixed with Berbers that converted to Judaism even before Islam was created so all of those mixing are very ancient.
I don't score any berber though.

Different Jewish communities were linked to each other even during the diaspora (at least in the first Milenia). The jewish community of Iraq ,Spain, North Africa and France were still in touch with each other so Mizrahim, Megrahbim, Sephardim and Ashkenazim celebrate Hanukkah.
Ethiopian Jews weren't in touch with other Jews so they didn't know about hanukkah.

Yeah they aren't the best. Some of their clusters either overlap or are very mixed so it skews the results. For example I'm pretty sure their North African is very mixed with Arab, so it comes out fine for North African people but it really affects Middle Eastern results. Either way since they will be having an update sometime in the future I hope it's going to get better. Even though for me it didn't come out completely wrong, just the percentages are way off.

Actually to be perfectly honest my Yemenite side isn't simply Yemenite Jewish, it's specifically Adeni Jewish (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Jews_in_Aden). They are considered the "white" Yemenites. I don't know whether there's any actual genetic difference (have no idea where they plot) but I thought to myself recently maybe they could be slightly closer to Levantines and that's the reason my Sephardi was so over estimated (as well as why all of my Yemenite matches score only 30%-60% Yemenite and some score occasional Sephardi/Mizrahi).

Not sure, although I was able to access some public records of a known ancestor, and there were people who migrated to Greece [then I'm assuming through the Balkans to Ukraine, Romania area]. I also have matches on some of these sites that tell me they are Romaniote from Ionnina, which adds to my 'suspicion.'
There are only about two dozen Romaniontes left in Ionnina, so, that's cool. But it doesn't sound like you have recent non-Ashenazi ancestry - correct me if I'm wrong?

MyHeritage is not very accurate (and I doubt these results are accurate - not that you're not Jewish, of course, but it's unlikely you'd have non-Jewish ancestry to the amount of almost 8%, and that throws into doubt the other low-level scores). Have you tested with anyone else? If so, what did they give you?
Also, what's your family lore, in percentage or fractal terms?
Where did you see 8% 'non-Jewish'? West Asian, Mizrachi, and Sephardic could all fall under 'Jewish' admixture.
Ancestry: 91% Ashkenazi (Romania, Moldova, Ukraine), 4% Middle Eastern, 2% Italian/Greek, 2% Iberian Peninsula, and <1% West Europe
23andme: 93% Ashkenazi, 6.1% Broadly European, 0.9% Unassigned
I am also talking to a few distant cousins on these sites - a few from Puerto Rico, Mexico, Brazil, and the Philippines that can trace their ancestry back to Spain in the Canaries and Galicia, no Ashkenazi in their lines. Dunno if that helps paint a picture
Yep not 'recent', it's one of my great great grandparents I think, which my percentages seem to indicate on a 'theoretical level' - i know that DNA isn't passed down in exact percentages etc.

West Asian + Iberian, specifically not Jewish as Mizrakhi is an enumerated category (7.5%). Don't worry, MyHeritage's rep was low before your results :)
Ancestry: 91% Ashkenazi (Romania, Moldova, Ukraine), 4% Middle Eastern, 2% Italian/Greek, 2% Iberian Peninsula, and <1% West Europe

I would suggest these, especially 23andme, are almost certainly far more accurate - even though they're less interesting. I'm sorry about that. Your Ashkenazi is slightly low for a pure Ashkenazi though, and small amounts of Sephardic ancestry can be subsumed under it. Is this Speculative, btw? Your unassigned is quite high.
BTW Ancestry has had an update.

Or so they think! Many Ashkenazim fled to Spain after the massacres of the first crusade.
But of course, having a distant Sephardic ancestor is at least equally possible.

Random inheritance models indeed. I suspect you don't have a purely Sephardic great great grandparent, though, or 23andme would have given you at least something other than AJ and European (MENA and Southern European, usually). GG grandparent is a lot - 6.125% - which doesn't show up. Do you know surnames? Genealogy is often more useful than DNA.

1. nah not speculative, it's the highest confidence interval they have
2. while the it's definitely possible they were Ashkenazi Jews in spain, i have some suspicion they were sephardic because last names on my family line included Kalonymos, Treve/Treves/Treviso, de Lucca, Tsarfati. Lots of movement between Spain, Italy, and Greece according to the records I have on this line. People on the same line even stayed in Spain/Portugal, got baptized, and had the name Abulafia, Coronel, Gracián etc. whereas my family apparently broke off and went to Greece then Eastern Europe. Not sure what kind of genetic impact this would have, if ANY, but I was also told that the village in Eastern Europe they ended up in was called 'little Valencia' or something by the expelled Jews who settled there.
3. at the end of the day, culture is what it is - we are insofar that we feel and practice and position ourselves. since my grandma says her family had origins in Valencia, Spain, I'm going to respect her claim and believe that and continuing acknowledging my 'sephardic roots'. haha culturally speaking that is, since at the end of the day jews moved around so much it's very hard to trace anything

That's unique, then!

Kalonymos isn't Separdic, in fact none of those first four names are. Kalonymos is the name of one of the richest Greek Jewish families of the first millennium (they eventually moved to Italy and spread out into Germany); Treviso is a town near Venice; Lucca is in Tuscany. Obviously Tsarfati means 'French' in Hebrew - maybe a Provencal Jew? They're not Ashkenazi, but not Sephardic, either.
Abulafia is an Arabic name (abu - grandchild[ren of]) - my great x5 grandmother was an Abulafia - borne by Sephardim but not Nuevos Cristianos - too distinctive! The Abulafias who remained changed their names. The Abulafias who preserved their fled to Greece, Morocco, and the rest of the Ottoman Empire, by and large.

Culturally speaking, do you maintain any Sephardic customs or minhagim though? let's not conflate family lore - true or not! - and actual culture :)
For instance, I'm 1/16 Baghdadi (well, that ancestor was part Sephardic, but I digress) but I wouldn't say I'm culturally Musta'arabi, as I wasn't raised with any ties to that particular tradition.
I also enjoy disabusing relatives of the notion they're descended from Moses Montefiore - the man had no children! He is/was a cousin - the kernel of truth to the story. Truth is important, I think.

In your opinion, wohld they be italian jews then? I see a bunch left and went to Greece, where Sephardim were, maybe that’s why I get a few Spanish and middle eastern percentages
Either way I’m going to reach out to a professional geneaologist at some point. I appreciate your opinions thus far!
Also one of my great uncles, an academic, has a list of direct male descendents, so I know I am directly descended from those families. It’s possible to trace when you’re part of prominent rabbinical lines

If you weren't raised with any Ashkenazi cultural traditions then no, you're not really culturally Ashkenazi! A lot of Jews, particularly in America, are totally assimilated. DNA isn't culture :)

On the basis of their surnames I would assume they are Italqim, yes. When did they go to Greece, and where? Venice owned large parts of Greece for a while and Italian Jews settled some of their colonies. I mean, if they were from Salonika, then definitely Sephardic, and if Rhodes, then it's quite likely, but elsewhere likely not.
Ignore MyHeritage, it's nonsense :) gives all sorts of bizarre results.

Oh it's extremely in vogue, my friend, and has been for about a century, I'm reliably informed, I'm afraid. Certainly nowadays it is. I get about one email every two weeks by someone asking if their matching my DNA proves they're distantly Sephardic, and within the Jewish community I know at least a couple of dozen Ashkenazim with vague stories of Sephardic ancestry they like to talk about. I named six in my head just right now.
Not saying it's not true! Some of them definitely will be!

I think I saw they were from Emilio Ferrara (?) and migrated to Salonica right before 1492, like 1490.
The only reason I became interested in this besides my grandma's lore is that it's not infrequent I'm confused as 'something else' a cab driver just told me I 'look like people in her village in the DR' that has 'less black people'. That there's something 'just latin' about your face but couldn't pinpoint. And then an argentinian family came up to me as if I knew exactly what they were saying in their dialect expecting directions. Also a few greek people told me I looked like/reminded them of their cousin, and my friend's italian grandma thought i was italian. I wanted to see if there was something else in there, but I've concluded with my research and this posting i MAY have some distant italian jewish ancestry if anything and there is some 'overlap' phenotypically amongst certain populations.
Still not sure what the 6% 'Broadly European' is though

I wouldn't read to far into that stuff. I pass for a lot of stuff. Either way you're overwhelmingly Ashkenazi :)
My dad is 100% Ashkenazi with no connection to Italy. He came to visit me in Italy once and he 'met' my roommates (obviously about six words were spoken in half an hour) and then he left (with my mum, who actually speaks a few words). As soon as he leaves, they all turn to me and go 'but he's Sicilian, right? He has to be.' His phenotype is apparently unmistakably Sicilian. But - he is 0% Sicilian. Sometimes people just pass for things they're not :)
It's natural to want to seek out the interesting parts of our ancestry. The Kalymnos family was the original European Jewish royalty! If they ended up in Salonika they'd have at least mixed with Sephardim though, even coming from Italy.

Yes, Romanian counts as Balkan on 23andme :) genetically they're also more Balkan than they are 'Eastern European,' although there are exceptions in the peripheral regions, and Moldovia.
What are your results on the most speculative setting? Speculative is better than conservative.
I bunch of calculators on GED match guess me not as Ashkenazi first, but Sephardic, Italian Jewish, even Greek before it guesses me as Ashkenazi. Why?
As I showed with my family's results, this is normal. It just means you're slightly less northern-shifted than the average Ashkenazi. GEDmatch is a line of best fit, rather than an ancestral breakdown. View it this way:
say the average Ashkenazi gets 30 x, 30 y and 40 z
the average Greek gets 32 x, 28 y and 40 z
you get 32 x, 28 y and 40 z
you'll appear closer to Greeks than Ashkenazim, but you're just an outlier.
That difference can be random, or it can be due to minor admixture that is non-Ashkenazi.
Gedmatch has a lot of references - many hundreds - some of which are very, very close to each other - so sometimes people appear closer to one than another.

Seems like it. As far as I know their Greek population includes Cyprus, which I believe is the reason it skews a lot of Middle Easterners results and makes them score lots of Greek (or Italian for that matter which is pretty interchangeable with Greek on MyHeritage).

According to K36 similarity map your closest population is North dodecanese (Greece).
When I remove the Levant/Samaritans your closests populations are Albania South/Lazio.
Seems like your European origins are Roman and not Spanish.
My last name is very common in Italy so maybe.

I don't think it's a waste, There's a reason FTDNA don't accept the v5, I don't want to get inaccurate results.

You really don’t have spanish Ancestry. It seems you are 45% Central Italian, 55% Judean (levantine). You don’t have strong Berber/Moroccan as well so it’s ignorable. You are probably descendant of Roman Jews migrated to Spain.
Few are the Sephardim who actually have significant Spanish blood, it’s usually Italian.
I think you should open a thread with your results. Many forum members are interested with jewish results.

I have loads of matches who are 100% Sephardic on MyHeritage. I'm pretty sure these people are part of their database and that's why. Either way it's interesting you score ~20% Moroccan despite being fully Turkish Sephardi (if I'm correct). I think it's due to shared ancestry with Moroccan Sephardis, I would assume they included some of them for their Moroccan reference.

I'm not fully Turkish Sephardi, My mother is Moroccan, My father was born in Egypt but his grandparents migrated to Egypt from Izmir, Turkey and Safed (צפת), Israel.
I was only able to find one 100% Sephardic but maybe there are more, However I did find some 100% Ashkenazi matches (mostly 4th to distant cousins, the closest one is 0.7% 50.9 cM), does this means I had a recent Ashkenazi ancestor ?

How did you determine Central Italian from the results as opposed to Southern Italian?

No.
1) HyHeritage isn't very good so
2) It could just as easily mean the Ashkenazi has Sephardic ancestors, following the logic you're using
3) In general these sites overestimate the degree of relatedness of their customers, but 'distant cousins' could be shared ancestry from the 1400s or even earlier

Kind of an old thread, but stumbled upon this and found it interesting ^^ my grandma and great uncle said there's a family manuscript that traces our family all the way back to spain, but that they eventually became Ashkenazi
Here's my my heritage results (also get full sephardic and also spaniard??? cousins at the 3-5 cousin range - def inflated):
82.3% Ashkenazi Jewish
5.7% Mizrachi Jewish - Iranian/Iraqi
5.1% West Asian
4.7% Sephardic Jewish - North African
2.2% Iberian Peninsula

I personally would ignore MyHeritage results, particularly for updates. For example, mine give me 10% Welsh even though I am fully Jewish.

I'm Ashkenazi. I agree.

Bumpity bump (for my own documentation)
So because I'm crazily impatient (:picard1:) about receiving my 23andme report I decided to estimate my anticipated results based on what I've gathered from a few individuals who are 100% each part of my ancestry and calculating it accordingly.
Wonder whether I nailed it or not lol.

Can already tell the method was wrong, as you ended up with 0.3% East Euro, while the average Ashkenazi doesn't even score it, nevermind you. Are you even part Ashkenazi?

My mountain Jewish relative scored .5% EE and I'm half of that + Google Sheets rounding action and that's what I was left with. Either way it's not going to be entirely accurate as I only have one individual representing each ethnic division I am.
I'm not part Ashkenazi.

Have seen 2 Mountain results so far, neither scored EE. Though, if your cousin did, that's more relevant. Mind sharing his results by pm? Curious what haplos they got too.

Almost everything said about the mizrahi jews in this thread is wrong. Every single mizrahi jewish subgroup is far from being pure levantine. Some groups are closer to levant than the others, however, all of the groups have significant non levantine admixture and in most cases mesopotamian+ little iranic admixture together dominates over levantine component in each mizrahi jewish population subgroups. Not every mizrahi jewish groups are the same and all of them differ from levantines quite a bit. They are closer to mesopotamians than they are to levantines...

Why are digging up and bumping all sorts of dead old threads?
I guess you are the real anti-Semite here because what you're implying is that no Jews are really native to Israel and don't belong there basically, at least not as supposedly rightful owners of the land. And since you claim you are an atheist Abraham and the Torah don't mean a thing to you either.

Lies. I am writing responses on these old threads because people are writing misinformation about certain ethnicities and I though it was necessary from my part to write a reply so that somebody else comes across the gullible comments on this thread. I am an anti semite because I said that Mizrahi Jews aren't pure ancient israelites and pure levantines? Just because I said the truth and provided the evidence for that makes me an antisemite? Where was your head when you wrote this? If you read my previous post carefully, I didn't deny that mizrahi jews had any connection with the levant. Either you can't read or just making up lies to slender me. Also, what negative influence does me being an atheist have on the sources I used or the way I constructed my reply? What bad does it do to me by not believing in the pile of fairy tales written thousands of years ago without any scientific proof backing them up? I would really like to know the intent of writing this braindead reply that you wrote in response to my previous comment since for me it definitely seems that you are just strawmanning me because you can't defend your illogical bias with the proof or evidence. Also, if you are so butthurt about me writing comments on these dead old threads then why the hell did you even visit this thread in the first place if it is so irrelevant? Either respond to my claims and the sources I have used by evidence or shut up and stop making bald claims about me.

Levantine may not be the largest component in most Mizrachim, but these models are terrible.

No Italian, interesting. A lot of Jews score it.
I'm Italian and 13% Sephardic Jewish but I don't know if it's a common Italian/Greek component or it's just Phoenician/Canaanite, because among the genetic groups it gives me Scotland, Corsica, Veneto/Friuli and Venezuela
