Philippi was father of alexander the great

Recipients
The city of Philippi (see map, p. 2445) was named after King Philip II of Macedon, father of Alexander the Great. It was a prosperous Roman colony, which meant that the citizens of Philippi were also citizens of the city of Rome itself. They prided themselves on being Romans (see Ac 16:21), dressed like Romans and often spoke Latin. No doubt this was the background for Paul's reference to the believer's heavenly citizenship (3:20-21). Many of the Philippians were retired military men who had been given land in the vicinity and who in turn served as a military presence in this frontier city. That Philippi was a Roman colony may explain why there were not enough Jews there to permit the establishment of a synagogue and why Paul does not quote the OT in the Philippian letter.

Philip is a given name, derived from the Greek Φίλιππος (Philippos, lit. "horse-loving" or "fond of horses"[1][2]), from a compound of φίλος (phílos, "dear", "loved", "loving") and ἵππος (hippos, "horse"). In Ancient Greece, the ownership of horses was available only to those rich enough to afford them. Thus, "lover of horses" can also be understood as "noble".[citation needed] Prominent Philips who popularized the name include kings of Macedonia and one of the apostles of early Christianity.

Philip has many alternative spellings, many of them with two Ls (such as Phillips, mostly found as a surname). It is also found during ancient Greek times with two Ps as Philippides and Philippos. It also has many diminutive (or hypocoristic forms) including Phill, Flip, Feli, Philly, Lip, Pip, Pep or Peps, and Pippo. There are also feminine forms such as Philippine, Philippa. Additionally, there is also; Philippe (from the French name, e.g. Philippe de Gueldres (Philippa of Guelders)).

philippians = Φιλιππησίους

philippi = Φιλίππων

Meaning & History

From the Greek name Φιλιππος (Philippos) which means "friend of horses", composed of the elements φιλος (philos) "friend, lover" and ‘ιππος (hippos) "horse". This was the name of five kings of Macedon, including Philip II the father of Alexander the Great. The name appears in the New Testament belonging to two people who are regarded as saints. First, one of the twelve apostles, and second, an early figure in the Christian church known as Philip the Deacon.

This name was initially more common among Eastern Christians, though it came to the West by the Middle Ages. It was borne by six kings of France and five kings of Spain. It was regularly used in England during the Middle Ages, although the Spanish king Philip II, who attempted an invasion of England, helped make it less common by the 17th century. It was revived in the English-speaking world in the 19th century. Famous bearers include the Elizabethan courtier and poet Sir Philip Sidney (1554-1586) and the American science fiction novelist Philip K. Dick (1928-1982).

It is an exceptionally beautiful country, albeit overcrowded with a troublesome Muslim minority.

”More than 7,000 islands make up the Philippines, but the bulk of its fast-growing population lives on just 11 of them.”

thanks .. it was once a 1st world country ( under U.S/Spain) 10-20 million people.. totally collapse into 3rd world under 20 year dictatorship & after-effects. 1960's to 1990's.. Philippines is basically a laughing stock on that region.. the filipino race is seen as inferior & christian religion is seen as plague/curse..

over population is huge problem on urban areas mostly. ( more birth control is being offered to counter it)
'' Hopefully'' it will be developed again by 2050 ( george soros predicted it will surpass 27+ countries) . it will enough to influence the region & grow the middle class & less poverty..

the constitution was modeled after american constitution.. it will be very very different from the rest of the region in the future, if it does get developed.. ( meaning its more open to globalization ).. while the rest of the region is very closed & nationalistic.
