Thanks for that. I'm interested in Icelanders because they have some Irish ancestry.

Using that kit here is their population mix on Eurogenes K13. Interesting that they get the same two population mix as myself on the K13. I also get North Dutch as my no 1 pop but Irish as 2nd. On the K15 my no 1 pop is Ireland and this kit gets Ireland as No 1 as well.

That's haplogroups though. You would think Icelanders are half Irish half Scandinavian going by that. Icelanders plot closest to Danes, south Swedes and North Dutch. Also modern day Irish and other Brits have a decent amount of Norse ancestry.

Yes I know there might be older affinity between these populations but I thought everyone was aware that Vikings took Irish and Scots women back with them to Iceland. This is mentioned in the Icelandic sagas about Irish female slaves.

There are also studies done on the mtdna of the Icelanders which trace a large amount of the mtdna to Ireland and the Scottish Isles.


A major task in human genetics is to understand the nature of the evolutionary processes that have shaped the gene pools of contemporary populations. Ancient DNA studies have great potential to shed light on the evolution of populations because they provide the opportunity to sample from the same population at different points in time. Here, we show that a sample of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region sequences from 68 early medieval Icelandic skeletal remains is more closely related to sequences from contemporary inhabitants of Scotland, Ireland, and Scandinavia than to those from the modern Icelandic population. Due to a faster rate of genetic drift in the Icelandic mtDNA pool during the last 1,100 years, the sequences carried by the first settlers were better preserved in their ancestral gene pools than among their descendants in Iceland. These results demonstrate the inferential power gained in ancient DNA studies through the application of population genetics analyses to relatively large samples


The Icelanders are one of the most studied populations in human genetics [1]–[5]. According to historical and archaeological sources, Iceland was settled roughly 1100 years ago by a mixture of people that originated primarily from Scandinavia and the British Isles [6],[7]. Studies of mtDNA variation indicate that contemporary Icelanders trace about 37% of their matrilineal ancestry to Scandinavia, with the remainder coming from the populations of Scotland and Ireland [1],[8],[9]. In contrast, Y-chromosome analyses suggest that 75–80% of their patrilineal ancestry originated in Scandinavia [3],[9].

I think that study has already found that they have Irish admixture. The reason why I know this is that they are trying to find what part of Ireland their dna is from.

The problem though with Gedmatch and even the K36 is that even people that are fully Irish like myself don't plot with Ireland and have a Scandinavian pull. I prefer scientific dna studies because if Gedmatch plots people like me as half Scandinavian I'm sceptical. What samples are they using? There is something wrong with calculators like Dodecad. I'll wait until the dna study on Iceland comes out. I think the problem is that Northwest Europeans have a lot of shared ancestry and only finescaled studies can really tease then apart.

Well we do have also Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman-era ancient DNA samples from the British Isles.

All seem more northern than modern day Brits for whatever reason. I'm actually very interested in samples from all over Europe during the Middle Ages. There seems no interest in those, even though it has to be kinda easy to dig up some old graves.

I tend to disagree with Celto-Germanic 50-50 position, it's more complicated as that, anthropological data clearly says that Icelanders are predominantly Scando in origin, i don't neglect Irish\Celtic heritage, but it's simply not as promitent as it's being put.
