Italian brazilians are not an homogeneous group, outside Sao Paulo urbe most Italians are from Veneto and Lombardy by far, 100 years ago north italians moved to rural Brasil and today you can largely find them in metropolis, cities and farm of South, Midwest and Sao Paulo country side. In Sao Paulo city the situation is different, the metropolis received a lot of South Italians, South Italians always prefer urban developed areas haha. Sao Paulo city has the same number of north and south descendants, the rest of Brasil has way more northerns. Probably the people you know are north italian brasilians.

95% of Italian immigrats of Brazil came from the North of Italy.
"Massa" is a southern Italian surname, he very probably descents from the 5% of immigrats who went to Brazil

I think that around 60-65% of italian immigrants were from the north. But with the extremely high birth hates of north italian in rural before 1950 and their also high birth hate in urban areas after the 50's they are like 80% of the italian makeup of Brazil today. That's why Italian Brazilians are different from Italian Argentines and completely different from Italian Americans.
