I've done DNA stuff from 23andMe to ftDNA and have uploaded to GEDmatch, without finding out anything really solid. Is there a way to use this ancestral DNA stuff to find a probable surname? To see surnames that might possibly be my biologically paternal surname, that is? Maybe searching my relative list for men with the same ydna haplogroup. Is there a better way?

Youll want the ydna test for that.

I got my y-dna when I did the 23andMe autosomnal test, is that not accurate enough?

It's not the yDNA test you need. They just give you your base haplogroup. ftDNA's yDNA test will give you matches, where theyre from, and how close they are in matching. Start with at least 37 marker.

Oof, $170 USD is not cheap though. At least, not for a broke student, lol. I'll have to wait until I have the money

I know this is a super old thread but I've just sent off my YDNA37 kit to ftdna and will update when I get the results back for anyone interested. Thanks for this recommendation btw. I kept it in mind

Y dna test on FTDNA is a good call; and just keep an eye for any close relatives on 23andme. You're bound to get at least a 2nd cousin pop up on your relative list eventually; if you haven't also consider doing Ancestrydna since they have the largest relative database.

See if you get any close cousin matches; some might be from your patrilineal side.
