Part 1:

For hundreds of years varies individuals suggested having a unified "Europe".
Some pseudo attempts were made by varies war means.
Later in the 1900s the Pan Europa project was proposed. Several reasons for it, including countering the Russian/Soviet threat.
During WW2 the plan was "put on hold" or prevented by Nazism.

Part2:

Right after the war the origins of EU started, many elites and people got tired of the Wars.
Tons of elites from Europe and USA gave: millions and billions of dollars, intelligence agencies, secret societies, monarchs, Catholic Church, and more.
The "European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) (1951), the Treaty of Paris (1951), and later the Treaty of Rome (1958) which established the European Economic Community (EEC), etc"
led to the European Union.

Part3:

So why is the EU a papertiger?

The US-UK since the end of WW2 were involved in the EU on some level. Europe was damaged by WW2. Yet most of the aid went to Western Europe. Today slowly coming to Central Europe in a different form.

The EU may look big and populated. European society and population is and was divided.
Its impossible to make so many people satisfied anytime soon. Individuals have different needs.
Political groups and countries have different views. Comparing Poland to Sweden to France to Greece is completely different.

The EU may look to have a big economy. But it has imbalances. Rich countries, poorer countries. Some countries are favored over others.
Many countries have massive debt. The EU is not country yet. Some countries have not adopted the Euro.

The EU theoretically could have a big army. But with language differences, many countries even the larger spendings have problems with their equipment.

The EU from the start always needed Anglo-American help. It still sucks up to NATO/CIA. Some countries very willingly, others less so.
EU elites welcome American aid... Some like America, others fear it, and finally others simply to maintain their power.

Many people exaggerate the influence of Germany-France in the EU. They got nothing on the US. In fact some of them work with US. There are other countries who completely favor US over
Germany-French. Some smaller state fear German-French and others fear Russia.

The French guy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_de_Gaulle tried his stuff and the Anglo-American establishment got angry with him. Even tried to assassinate him. He was simply to French and European for them. He got to many enemies and was replaced wiith a more pro establishment figure.

Any major political group in the EU who gets into power must or will submit to USA pressure. Merkel was spied on by 5-eyes groups and her phones listened/hacked by USA.
Obama or Trump can make a phone call and countries are listening or changing their views.

Just recently with the killing (lets assume it happened) of some double agent UK got angry. Calls in the US. And the rest of Europe falls in line. At first it was half the nations who within moments supported the Anglo-American cause. And slowly a couple more joined in.
While some countries have still refused to kick out diplomats, most of them are small/tiny countries. The US just needs to hold pressure in bigger nations.

(completely my own article, and I know many people have similar views, including some politicians).
