Immigrants are one of the debate topics for the upcoming parliamentary elections. The discussion has also risen to prominence in literature and on stage.

The book Maassa maan tavalla (When in Rome, Do as the Romans Do), published on Wednesday, gives a voice to immigration critics. Non-fiction writer Milla Hannula traces the rise and development of criticism against immigration since the 1970s.

On the other hand, a theatre performance premiering in the Helsinki theatre Takomo on Friday promotes understanding towards immigrants. The play, called Paratiisi (Paradise), tells of difficulties and prejudice that can hinder immigrants in Finland.

Some of the actors are of immigrant background, so they have first-hand experience with the issues discussed in the play.

The immigration debate has become an important political theme in just a few years. The consensus of silence cartell of the three big parties has been broken, almost completely thanks to articulate and popular critics such as Jussi Halla-aho.
