I'm usually not a big fan of cover versions really. I tend to think if the original band can't make it "the most excellent song evah!" how can somebody else?

Well I have been proven wrong of course.

Here are some of my favourite covers.

1. Bad Company's "Bad Company":

ww5GXbk58R0

Five Finger Death Punch's "Bad Company":

u_VsvZmIWxY

***Although I like Bad Company's original version, I much prefer FFDP's version. I think it's grittier and richer in sound. Heavier as such a song should be sung, if you ask me.

2. Bob Dylan's "Knocking on Heaven's Door":

62WWwfnFDTU

Guns and Roses' "Knocking on Heaven's Door":

-W0rj02kt_c

***I usually can't stand Bob Dylan but upon a relistening, it's not bad. However I much prefer Axel Rose's version. He does an admirable job I think of making a classic folksey song rock.:thumbs up

So, do you like covers or not? If so, what are some of your favourites?

The Grateful Dead covering the Marty Robbins classic, El Paso.

The original one is always the original one. But then there are great covers and covers that are pure blasphemy.

Excellent covers, IMO:

Creedence's is great, but performances like these brought the song to a different dimension. One can laugh at a thousand beyoncés in comparison...
I_MqvP3VL74

Franklin's Respect, without a doubt.

6FOUqQt3Kg0

And Joe Cocker's version of this Beatles' song changed it completely:

uQYDvQ1HH-E

Don't ask me why, but it seems the late sixties-early seventies was a nice time for good covers. :D

Unfortunately I couldn't find a decent YouTube upload of Dylan's 'Man in the Long Black Coat', but Mark Lanegan's cover is a favourite of mine:

n0OhFBBCfOM

Von Thronstahl's 'We Walked in Line'...

02M7h-1qU0Q

...is an interesting take on Joy Division's 'They Walked in Line':

Absolutely excellent choices Ibex! :thumb001:

And yeah I most enjoy Cocker's version as opposed to the Beatles'. :thumbs up

And Allenson, nahh like I didn't know you were a Deads fan! ;) :P :D

EDIT: Joy's who, Wynnie? :P Nice choices, thx! :)

Ok Screamooooooooooooooo! :P

So were these originally screamo songs and redone better by another screamo band or not screamo originally but covered in the screamo genre?
Not a trolling question either but a legit one since I don't know this kind of metal music much at all.

Thx E.! :)

PS: Gotta love titles such as "genital grinder" LOL

Erm .... (clears throat), "Genital Grinder" is from the seminal album (are you ready?) Reek of Putrefaction by the British grindcore pioneers Carcass.

The original (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pd7iCFfjkZQ) sounds like it was recorded on a C-cassette deck thrown into a toilet bowl two rooms down from where the band was playing, so besides featuring better playing, Pig Destroyer's version befenits from having actual production values of some kind. :D

Behemoth's cover is of Day of Suffering (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLTTHHP-UqU) from Morbid Angel's second album Blessed Are the Sick (MA's album titles come in alphabetical order; they should release their "I-album" later this year), which is probably THE death metal album I've spent the most time listening to.

Finally, that Vader improve upon Slayer's Raining Blood (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KsPZ1f7MDs), defies the laws of physics. :thumbs up

(Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Km9lRswVy4)is Tori Amos' version btw :p)

Maybe I'll think of some non-screamo cover favourites to post here tomorrow. :)

Here's just a few of my favorits.

Alabama Song, originally by Kurt Weill (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurt_Weill), covered by The Doors:

T_d_VJbYAfc

Dylan's All Along the Watchtower, covered by Jimi Hendrix:

bng3agUOYiI

George Thorogood's version of Milburn's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amos_Milburn) One Bourbon, one Scotch, One Beer

osTa-A-ts9g

Johnny B. Goode, originally by Chuck Berry, as coverd by Peter Tosh:

TKtURqCt-JQ

Muddy Water's You Shook Me, covered by Led Zeppelin:

z30HykJ8FAw

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The worst cover ever, for me, was Madonna's mutilation of American Pie. Unlike her version, I just love Don McLean's original :thumb001:

Jimi also has by far the best cover of Hey Joe.

Just discovered this video earlier today. I don´t know if it´s better than the original, but I like it a lot. Plus he gets extra indie cred for being a bum. :p

Oh yes of course and this one. As much as I usually like Leonard Cohen, his original version of Hallelujah gets a little unbearable with the dated synths and 80s production and all (which I usually love lol). Buckley´s version has become somewhat of a cliché and overplayed staple over the years, but it still sounds better to my ears. :)

Actually hadn´t heard this before. Vocally pretty similar, actually, but only without the guitar which is an instant no-no when comparing the two. :p Honestly I´m not even that a huge huge fan of Buckley´s version, I just think it´s better than the original. Here are some more.

I think The Who´s Summertime Blues is better than Eddie Cochran´s original (which is by all means good too).

ea0759BeJ2U

Not necessarily better than the original, but a little moodier and more atmospheric: My Morning Jacket´s take on Rocket man compared to Elton John´s original.

I prefer Buckley's version. I love k. d. lang to pieces, but hers still comes in second place for me. Rufus' is bland, Cohen, bless him, is always outshone by whoever covers his songs - kinda like Dylan, IMHO.

Oh, and I've been thrashed for saying so, but I actually find Stevie Ray Vaughn's (AND Sting's) version of "Little Wing" more enjoyable than Jimi Hendrix'.

And EVERYONE does a better cover of any Dylan song - I can't stand his voice for anything.

Its seems like at least half of Marilyn Manson's songs were covers of songs from the 70s and 80s. In just about every case, I actually like Manson's version better.

A band called Day of the Sword from Philadelphia in the early 90s recorded a number of covers of Skrewdriver classics such as 'Win or Die' and 'Hail the New Dawn' which are actually played better than the original. I don't see them on Youtube, but they are available on many download sites.

Gorgoroth's cover of Darkthrone's Slottet I Det Fjerne

When this came out I really thought this cover was revolutionary in BM. It could have very well sparked a new genre of extreme music.

But it didn't (not that I know of)

There is Black Industrial, but nothing quite like this. This is what Black Industrial SHOULD sound like. Completely devoid of any gayness (the irony, I know, I know).
