Carnaval

Hi guys,

well it is the time of the year again, carnaval, an event that starts 40 days before easter. Well for me and most of the others here in this city it started yesterday :p.

In this thread I will summarize the days of Carnaval in my city ;).
I already started yesterday! Got a few pictures that I will upload later today.

Yesterday already thousands of people headed into the center of time to drink.

With carnaval you can dress up as anything, male, female, baby, soldier, knight, clown etc. etc.

The official colors of carnaval are: Red, Yellow & Green.
With these 3 colors you can make any color that you want, that's why it are the 3 official colors and you will see them everywhere!

Here comes another story, about yesterday.


Yesterday I went into town at 14:15, was in the center at 14:45 and went drinking with some friends on the Vrijthof. Here was a party, called the Vasteloaftrap. Well we each took 10 coins for drinking and when we finished the coins we headed to the Vogel Struys for some beer :p. Vogel Struys is a famous pub and has won multiple things for the skill of the employees etc. It has also been the best pub of the Netherlands for a few times.

Well now we ordered the beer there all the time, in the mean time I saw some artists that would perform lateron and I asked them to take a picture with them.

Around 19:00 we had something to eat and headed to a pub where i stayed untill 20:30, a girl asked me the day before if I would come to a other pub on saturday <-- can't so no to her. In the pub we had some fun and drank some beers, singing along with the music and stuff. Then I headed to the Irish pub for that girl, we arrived at the same time :p. Already drank enough and we had a nice chat and started pooling. She beated me at pooling...
Well I need to call her today she said, so we could arrange something to drink etc.

It was time to go home, but first eat something! Then to the busstation, and ofcourse, for the third time that day I saw the bus drive away right in front of my eyes... Hey! Wait another 20 minutes :@.
Ah well I got home and watched some television and went to bed :p.

We also have the Carnaval now.... but I am shocked! :eek: that you have one also, because I thought it was an Orthodox holiday...even the dates of orthodox and non-orthodox christian Easters don't match!

An other excuse to get drunk? :P hehe silly people, one does not need excuses to get drunk. :P

It's not just an excuse to get drunk, at least in Greece it is a very important surviving pagan tradition.

Actually there is nothing christian whatsoever in the Carnaval. It is a purely Dionysian fest where people dress up, drink tons of a special sweet red wine (it's called Maurodafne, it's very ritualistic in nature), dance incessantly for three days in a state of ecstasy and laughter.

I heard in some private costume parties there are also sexual orgies being conducted, 'Eyes Wide Shut' sort of things :D If that's true, then it is, indeed, very Dionysian :D

Here is another small story about yesterday, the first day of carnaval here.
Didn't make many pictures, just 4 and 2 are bad quality, so 2 pictures :p

Well yesterday I dressed up as the ara-BIER, got many comments about it <-- only positive comments :p.

In the afternoon I headed into town and went to my grandparents who were also in town watching the parade. Drank some beers with my grandfather and then I headed to a other pub where I hooked up with some people of the marching band. From there on we started drinking and drinking and going from pub to pub and making fun. Pff I drank pretty much, I guess around 30 to 40 glasses of beer. Everywhere we went we drank beer and had a chat with other people, singing, dancing etc.

Well don't have much more to say :p so here are 2 pictures.

Ok here comes like my story for the last day of Carnaval.
Yes I know I am late with it so be quiet :p.


Well the last day, my 5th day of drinking, started pretty fucked up for me.
Got a hangover from here to the Vrijthof :p. The night before I drank very much and ate something wrong between the drinking.

Well around 7pm I went into town and took a beer, man I felt good again :D. Went to the Kesselskade to some friends of me and drank some beers.

In the pub we saw a guy who dressed up as André Rieu, who doesn't know André Rieu the famous violin player from Maastricht. This was a very funny scene :p. Well in the pub they started to play music that is also played by André Rieu himself and it was great to see this and we had a good laugh :p.

Lateron I went to the people from the marching band and we started drinking hard again, hehe. We visited a lot of pubs, had nice chats with other people etc. No fights or what so ever.
Around 11:30 pm we went to the Vrijthof, because at 12:00 pm the Mooswief would be taken down, and carnaval would end. Thousands of people gathered at the Vrijthof to see this happen and sing the anthem of Maastricht just before she would be taken down.

Well at 12 pm it was time, a person at the stage started to play the anthem of Maastricht on his trumpet and then all those thousands of peoples started to sing the anthem. It gives you goosebumps to hear that. The anthem was over and the Mooswief came down, on 3 places they fired up some 'Bengal fire', what a nice scene that was.
After that we drank something and split up, time to go home :( Carnaval was over again :(.
