View Full Version : Outlying Sicilian/Calabrese GEDMatch result -- extremely MENA/almost NO STEPPE.

This person is noteworthy because they have the lowest North European affinity of any southern Italian yet. But it is consistent with Sarno et al, which has Palermo and Calabria with very low Steppe.

These should be regions that may retain the ancient genetic character of the land.

Ancestry is half from Cerda, Palermo province, Sicily and half from Spezzano, Cosenza province, Calabria.

I know I have mentioned this before, but what is it about the Central_Greek reference population that makes it turn up foremost among Cypriots, Calabrese, etc? You said it includes islands in the Aegean, I think, but I thought the only islands closely related to Cyps and Calabrese were Dodecanese. Aegean islanders also have elevated Caucasus/West Asian too?

Central Greek sample is a mixture of Athenians and North Aegean islands. And it is close to the "East Sicily" (Syracusan) sample.

Okay, but that doesn't explain why for MENA shifted populations like the Calabrese and Cypriots it usually comes up as their closest related Greek reference in gedmatch above everything else. Do you have any ideas why that would be?

It isn't their closest Greek population, it is just that the Eurogenes K15 calculator only has "Greek" (which is a mainland average), "Greek Thessaly" which has more Slavic input, and "Central Greek."

If you look on MDLP K23, the closest for this person is "Greek Islands" which is Dodecanese as well as Greeks from Smyrna, which is in Turkey.

According to that calculator they are significantly different and much more West Asian.

This person is closer to Lebanese than to Thessalian Greeks (see Eurogenes K15) and is closer to Cypriots than to any mainland Greek population (see MDLP K23).

It pops up very often in the top 5 of Mainlanders at least Peloponnesians as well.

They get it in their to 5 among with Abruzzo often as their closest 2.

Alot of them get Central Greek even at number 1.

Sikeliot posted some Southern Mainland Greek results in a thread of mine which got Albanian in their top 5 and Bulgarian in their top 10
to prove that they are more "Northern" Balkan shifted than Sicilians but even all of his results got Central Greek first before Albanian or

One of them, yes.

Did you see the Bronze Age Sicilian sample? It was a mixture of Caucasus and Sardinian/EEF. This should tell us of which components came first. Then, southern Calabria (considered the oldest/most preserved south Italian group) has high SW Asian/Levantine also, but low Steppe.

So I think south Italy started out Sardinian-like, then acquired Caucasian, then SW Asian/Levantine, and then I think North Euro input and North African are the most recent things.

The Bell Beaker was very low quality sample (6615 SNPs on GEDmatch) from Trapani and it plots very close to modern Trapanese (West_Sicilian). I wouldn't draw any conclusion for all of south Italy based only on 1 sample and it's unlikely that there were two different migrations one carrying Caucasian and the other carrying "Levantine". As I have already told you so many times, the difference even between the Calabrese and the Mycenaeans was simply in the greater Caucasian component (perhaps Anatolian) and not in the Levantine one.
The questions are too many and the ancient DNA is too little.
That individual will certainly be a Jew, these are the results of a Calabrian whose origin is not clear to me and it's a bit different from the one you posted:

Depends on the calculator. I can't speak for all South Greeks but if you examine Peloponnesian results on Gedmatch MDLP K16 for example you'll most likely find top 5 populations (maybe not in this order).
1 Italian (Tuscany)
2 Greek (Greece)
3 Italian (Abruzzo)

Why only Kosovar and not Sicilian to begin with.?

I have seen reasonably often Peloponnesian gedmatch results who get Sicilian even West before Kosovar in their top 5,some
get even Ashkenazi Jew before Kosovar.

No I'm sure that Kossovar not being in the top is common. I just wanted to point out that Mainlanders share a closer genetic proximity to Albania, Kossovar and Bulgaria than any Aegean population.I mean you even cited the article that distinguishes the genetic makeup of Greek Islanders and Mainlanders. No one population group is more "Greek" than the other just different genetic histories that's all.

The "Sicilian" samples on Eurogenes are very north shifted compared to the average person on the island, because they used the most northern plotting region on each side of the island to represent them. If places like Agrigento or Messina were choices, there is no mainland Greek who would score them in their top 5.

But you know full well that this is not common.

I have never seen a result of a native person from Thessaly or north of it scoring Sicilian over Albanian/Kosovar, and even among Peloponnesian results it is not common.

I posted a lot of Thessalians the other day. 6 of the 9 were closer to North Italians than to Sicilians, and all 9 were closer to Kosovars and Albanians than to either.
