In general it appears the southwest of Italy (Campania, Calabria, Sicily) has more Near Eastern input than does Apulia, Abruzzo, or Lucania.
Some, but not all, Apulians are so northern shifted that they could be modeled as mainland Greeks.

Southern Italy is closer to Greeks.... because they are Greeks.
Why are you amused by the fact that Greeks are close to Greeks?
Italians as a historical people never existed, Italy (as a region) was populated by Greeks, Celts, Etruscans (Lydians from Anatolia) etc..

I have trouble trusting Sikeliot for obvious reasons. People who have had DNA testing in south Italy are very few and I am sure that these individuals were born in America and have ancestors not only from Italy or, more likely, not only from the places indicated in this thread. I have no reason to distrust Sikeliot's gedmatch posts. Regarding the family tree concern, that criticism can apply to anyone's kit, even if they were born in the place they purport to come from.
The only issue I have with Sikeliot is his denial of any ancient Greek ancestry in Cyprus. Of course I am Greek Cypriot and this is a bias I clearly have and openly admit. So when I see results like these from Apulia that do have Cypriots come up in their matches, I get frustrated with Sikeliot's argument. The only way I can feasibly account for these results is this:
1) There is a common ancestry from mainland Greece that extends to South Italy and Cyprus. Since Sikeliot has argued Apulians are the closest to mainland Greeks in South Italy, the fact they match with Cypriots, regardless the distances, means something.
OR
2) The fact Lebanese also comes up means these areas are not identical to the mainland, and that Apulians have also received (or retained) ancestry from a population that is more comparable to the Levant than the Balkans. In that case, they are not good proxy for mainland Greece.
OR
3) Combination of the above

Are you his lawyer? I am not accusing anyone and I respect Sikeliot, but he posted results of Jews trying to present them as Calabrians, posted a Lombard that was 1/4 Jewish and tried to sell it as a typical Lombard, or like that time that he posted results of Lazio that as populations had the Calabrians and Sicilians even before the Abruzzese. These are some of the reasons why I do not trust the results he posts.
Many Italian Americans have origins from different parts of south Italy and not only, for example, from a single city or province. This is why I say it would be good to see their family tree.

If you go to GEDmatch and click their family trees you can see it shows all of their parents, grandparents, etc's surnames and the specific towns they were from. These are people of recent Italian immigrant background.
Besides, the thing no one is ever able to answer is, who could all of these Italian Americans be mixing with to produce such MENA shifted results? There is no such group in the US that they could be mixing with en masse to produce consistent results like this. It is impossible, because it is not true.

Common Levantine affinity with Cypriots more than common Greek ancestry with them, I suspect.

For why Apulians score Cyprus, it is more likely the second of what you said, because Cypriots appear higher on the list for Apulians (and again higher for Sicilians/Calabrese) than for Peloponnesians or other mainland Greeks.
There is likely Mycenaean Greek ancestry in Cyprus (which explains why in studies like Sarno et al, Sardinian-like/EEF admixture is higher in Cyprus than in the Levant) but I don't think common mainland Greek ancestry could explain the phenomenon pictured above.
Also, the southern Italians further from mainland Greeks are in turn closer to Cypriots, so it is likely a third-party Levant-related source of admixture bringing southern Italians closer to Cyprus.

I have never posted a single Jewish person pretending they were Calabrese. YOU made that assumption because they scored Jewish first in their Oracle population, but I told you in their family tree and family surnames which were publicly uploaded, you could clearly see the person was 100% Calabrese with no Jewish ancestry. It was just inconceivable to you that a Calabrese might score components similar to Jews before the South Italian reference, but both groups are so similar it only takes very minor altering of percentages of components to turn a "South Italian" into a "Sephardi Jew" on a Gedmatch calculator. But this went entirely over your head.

I did not make that assumption because they had the Jews as the first population but because they were distant @ 7 from the Calabrian sample. Then one can be a Jew even if born in Calabria. Anyway, let's not kid ourselves, it was not the first time you post fake or unusual results, you did it in that thread of Lazio too.
If possible can you send me the kits used in this thread via private message? I'm partly Lucanian/Apulian and I'd be curious. I don't think Apulians differ so much from the other south Italians.
The southern Italians further from mainland Greeks are in turn closer to Cypriots, so it is likely a third-party Levant-related source of admixture bringing southern Italians closer to Cyprus.
South Italians are usually closer to Greeks/Islanders/Greek-Island mixes than to Cypriots.
The fact Lebanese also comes up means these areas are not identical to the mainland, and that Apulians have also received (or retained) ancestry from a population that is more comparable to the Levant than the Balkans. In that case, they are not good proxy for mainland Greece.
One of the Mycenaeans also had Lebanon in the oracle. In general, all of southern Italy differs from Greece due to the absence of the Eastern European component present in the Greeks.

If possible can you send me the kits used in this thread via private message? I'm partly Lucanian/Apulian and I'd be curious. I don't think Apulians differ so much from the other south Italians.
Some Sicilians are distant from the Sicilian reference population. You do realize a reference population made up of people from just one or two towns cannot possibly accurately reflect an entire region, no? I've seen some Irish score England well before any Irish sample and at a distance to the Irish samples. I've seen a Dodecanese Greek score southern Italians and Jews well before any other Greeks. You are making assumptions based on your lack of understanding of how the reference populations reflect every individual... they do not.
Another example is people from Palermo come up closer to "East Sicily" and "South Italy" due to the West Sicily sample being from Trapani, which is genetically an outlier for Sicily (see Sarno et al).
South Italians are somewhere intermediate between mainland Greeks and Cypriots, due to two things: absence of NE European in south Italians (except, again, some Apulians) and the presence of a secondary SW Asian/North African like component that is noticeably lower in Greeks. Crete or Dodecanese would be the closest match to southern Italy.

I never said anything against the Jews so you can not say I'm anti-Semitic. You have no reason to be offended.
The source of your butthurt and unfounded accusations against Sikeliot, seems to be about Jewish scores on Italian samples.
I sense some latent antisemitism in you.;)
I'm mostly Ashkenazi and get heavy Italian scores on my GEDmatch results, and think nothing of it...
I have no issues having ancient Italian ancestry, seems like tons of gentiles have major issues with the fact that many Italians have genetic affinity with Ashkenazi Jews.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the biggest difference between Greeks and south Italians the Steppe component present in the Greeks? South Italians seem to have very little of it.

there is no such thing like "ancient Italian ancestry", actually also many Greeks have a genetic affinity with Ashkenazi Jews, and Ashkenazi Jews have very low IBD sharing with Italians and Ashkenazi Jews have more IBD with Eastern Europeans.
It's quite pathetic that you put the Italian flag. Italy was born in 1860.

That, and some non-Caucasus derived Near Eastern input in southern Italians (15-20%).

They don't. They scored Levantines lower on their Oracles than modern mainland Greeks do.

LOL.
OK.
Paying respect to my VERY substantial northern Italian maternal component, that is a huge part of the Ashkenazi genome is "pathetic."
These people TODAY are known as Italians.
Do you want me to fly an ancient Roman flag?
Assholes like you would take issue with that...
There is no such thing as ancient Italian ancestry, and the formation of the Ashkenazi ethnic groups didn't involve converted Roman wives?
With all of the antisemitism I have seen by allegedly Italian posters, I should rethink flying the Italian flag, but fact is that the Italians I hang with everyday are NOT imbeciles and bigots like you.

overall genetic composition matches some parts of southern Italy to begin with not Italy as whole, as parts of the Greek world. and genetic composition doesn't mean anything. there are many european ethnicites who match but are quite distinct

Italians don't feel related to your people, I'm telling you the simple truth, and not because they are anti semitic but just because they are not related to you.
I would never put the flag of a country to which I am not related.

Another thing that really bothers me is MY complete lack of any anti-Italian bigotry is not reciprocated by many Italian posters in regards to Jews.
By admitting that Ashkenazi Jews have northern Italian gentile maternal lines, I come in conflict with many Jews and get a ration of shit from them.
But the truth is better than being a fuckwit and bigoted retard.
I always know a poster is failing in their argument when they lamely attempt to fart out IBD stats...
I respect my Italian heritage and will not deny it.

Whatever man.
I read Sikeliot's reply to you.
He cut you down to size and totally owned you.
Goodbye.
Sure lol, keep kissing his ass.
Sikeliot
04-22-2018, 04:05 PM
Then you don't understand a shit. The source of my "accusations" against Sikeliot is that he posted fake results to make people pass for what they aren't. It is not my fault if all the southern Italians have as first population South_Italian, East_Sicilian, Italian_Abruzzo or West_Sicilian. If you feel offended by what I say that's your fucking problem.
This is another person related to me on GEDmatch and has proven Calabrese ancestry from four towns in Reggio Calabria, see how they score? The region is diverse, not homogenous.
This person is 3% more Red Sea than average. That's ALL it takes to make them closer to Sephardim. Hardly any change.
Also, your "typical" Calabrese example is closer to Cypriots than to Thessalian Greeks, and almost as close to Lebanon as to Thessaly.

Also I could show you people from Messina and Palermo exactly like that one Calabrese person. Calabrese aren't mainland Greek and Apulian like sorry to tell you.

There are Sicilians and southern Italians who are basically like Peloponnesians and then there are outliers similar to Sephardim and North African Jews, with most being somewhere in the middle. This is well known. I don't know why he is acting like they are homogenous.
Sarno et al found that in southern Italy there are at least three genetic clusters, with some having more Near Eastern input than others.

Those people were indeed from Lazio. And that other person from Calabria. I never pretended they are average results, they may not be at all but don't deny that they are what they are or ascribe to them identities that they do not have.

I thought that Lazio/Latium was genetically Northern Italian - like Tuscans or Venetians?

He wasn't being serious in that thread, there are very few GEDmatch results from Lazio. I found this person whose ancestry is from:

Those people were indeed from Lazio.
She was from the province of Frosinone, where there is the border between central and southern Italian languages, and not all her ancestors were from Lazio, in her genealogical tree there were also southern Italian surnames and other surnames quite difficult to trace and not native to Lazio.
I wonder what Pope Francis is like autosomally...
If the info about his ancestry is accurate, he would be like some Ligurian/southern Piedmontese, so a northwestern Italian of some sort.

Even the result from Caserta/Frosinone I posted was different from those ones in that thread.

what people don't understand of south italians is that people from historically bigger cities are often going to have more northern and sometimes even more middle eastern (often a combination of both) than average south italian whose ancestors were village dwellers who had no other option than to fuck their (distant) cousins for centuries , no offense to put but there is a scientifically proven slight inbreeding among older south italians (not the younger ones and the inbreeding was for 2nd and 3rd grade cousins so not really bad)
they were far less likely to marry and/or breed with foreigners than people from larger cities.
