So my father is predominately of English heritage, though our direct paternal line is Scottish. Further back (starting in the 18th century largely) there are multiple Dutch, a few Swedish, one or two German (Oldenburg), and a few Welsh lines, but still a larger majority of English. Thus I expected him to have a high Great Britain percentage, yet here are the results:

A mere 3%? How could it be so low?

Is my father simply more continental oriented? Were the Dutch and Scando genes further back particularly strong?

If it helps, here are his Eurogenes K15 results in comparison:

North_Sea 36.82
Atlantic 27.43
Baltic 11.04
Eastern_Euro 9.02
West_Med 11.93
West_Asian 3.52
Siberian 0.24

I have, that's how I got the Eurogenes K15 results. Various population calculators put him as English, Dutch, Scottish, Frisian, "Mixed Germanic", etc. I still am unsure how his Great Britain could be so little and Western Euro so high unless its the Anglo-Saxon component of the English that's strong? Maybe the Dutch/North German/Danish/Swedish lines further back left a bigger genetic impact?

I'd suggest you to not to take so seriously the report that is given you by your testing company. They are suck. You are not the only one who gets goofy results:

This is just crazy. At least those tests work well on a continental level. However for my family FTDNA was more or less successful from a regional perspective as well.

Hi

If it helps, I’m totally British/Irish and I only get 11% British too. I get:

39% Ireland/Scotland/Wales
30% Europe West
12% Scandinavia
11% Great Britain

I’m not sure what they use as reference groups, or how they divide ‘British’ from the Irish/Scottish/Welsh mix, but I shouldn’t score quite that high in the latter. I’m not sure where in the British isles people score the highest British either.

My guess is that the Europe West is actually my English genes that have been influenced by Germanic invaders, same with my Scandinavian. Your dad’s Europe West will also have been boosted a little more by his Dutch and German.

On LivingDna’s test, which is more targeted at British people as they align you to regional areas within Britain that you match, I don’t score anything in Europe but British and Irish, and mostly south east English. As this is the region most affected by the continent it may explain my Ancestry DNA results.

Where in England was your dad’s ancestry from?

My Eurogenes k15:

1. North_Sea 38.73
2 Atlantic 25.96
3 Baltic 11.50
4 West_Med 8.91
5 Eastern_Euro 7.87
6 West_Asian 5.33

Not too dissimilar to his.

39% Ireland/Scotland/Wales (only the Rep of Ireland is not part of the UK) + 11% Great Britain = 50%. Europe West and Scandinavia are also Celtic and/or Germanic.

Thanks for the reply. Since my father is largely of old American stock, his English ancestry is from all over, but it seems mostly concentrated in the South and South East, I guess ranging from Wiltshire to East Anglia and Kent for those who I have traced back. Of course the direct paternal line is Scottish as noted, though I have yet to find his original homeland....based on what I've narrowed it down to through records, seems to either be in Argyll, Galloway, or Ayrshire....smaller chance for being Roxburghshire.

So with his high West Euro, 10% Scando, and matching up with Frisians and Dutch on some of the GEDMatch calculators, is it safe to assume my father is more Germanic/Saxon/Norse oriented than Celtic?

Scotland should not be grouped with Ireland and Wales on Ancestry.com in my opinion.
