A Paterson police officer whom friends described as a loving, kind-hearted family man was pronounced dead after a one-car crash on Getty Avenue late Sunday morning, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office.

Police Officer Tamby Yagan, a Wayne resident, was on duty and crashed into a parked car, city officials said.

The Prosecutor's Office said police arrived to find that a Paterson police officer had been involved in a crash with a parked vehicle while in his cruiser.
"The officer was the only person involved in the crash and was transported to Saint Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries," a press release said. There were no other injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.

He was a cop's cop," said Police Director Jerry Speziale. "He's somebody who went above and beyond. He was a true community person."

Speziale said Yagan also was a devoted father to his young son. "He was a well-rounded person," the director said.

Paterson Police Chief Troy Oswald said of his colleague, "He was a great worker, and his death is truly a loss to Paterson's Police Department and its residents."

It was not clear whether the accident was the cause of his death, or whether the officer, who was 41, suffered a medical emergency before the 10:50 a.m. crash.

The case is being investigated by the New Jersey State Police and the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office.

Officials said there was no indication Yagan was involved in a pursuit.
