Anyway back to the topic at hand his results seem pretty typical but I was expecting more north Africa

I think that’s because some people here expect Canarians to be overwhelmingly North African, but that’s not the case. also, many tests are not registering the ancient Guanche Berber as North African, but rather is breaking apart the West Eurasian DNA from the Sub-Saharan part of North African DNA, thus you see on some tests it shows small West African scores. But this is false, it’s actually breaking apart the Guanche ancestry for some reason (I have my opinions).

Actually, his North African is inline for his island, which according to a genetic study on Canarians I posted, Canarians average 17.4% North African as a whole, but for Tenerife it’s lower at 14.3%.

Check out his North African score on his Eurogenes K15, it shows him to be in the Tenerife-Gran Canaria range for North African (Gran Canaria average is 12.4%) at 11%-15% range on the two population score and similar to Portuguese/Murcia/Extremadura for his single population score because of the elevated North African beyond the Catalan or Castilian population reference:

Canarians are a mix of Iberian and Guanche Berber, not Iberian and West African. The SSA comes from the North African ancestry. If an average North African Berber would be 75% West Eurasian and 25% SSA, then a Canarian that is 3%-5% SSA would be about 1/8-1/6 North African Berber putting them anywhere between 11%-16% North African and the rest Iberian.

It’s common that these calculators can not register ancient Guanche as North African under the North African component percentage, but often do under the mixed mode, two population percentage as shown in the Eurogenes K15 I posted of this Tinerfeño (Tenerife Canarian). In this thread. I have my opinions why this happens.

Yeah one does have to keep in mind that the Guanche's were considerably Sardinian/SW Euro shifted compared to formally sampled modern day Maghrebis. So Moroccans or Mozabites are not accurate representations of Guanche ancestry.

One Guanche was actually very similar to modern Moroccans, and this is the best quality sample.

But others were Sardinian-shifted indeed.

I think that’s because some people here expect Canarians to be overwhelmingly North African, but that’s not the case. also, many tests are not registering the ancient Guanche Berber as North African, but rather is breaking apart the West Eurasian DNA from the Sub-Saharan part of North African DNA, thus you see on some tests it shows small West African scores. But this is false, it’s actually breaking apart the Guanche ancestry for some reason (I have my opinions).


Actually, his North African is inline for his island, which according to a genetic study on Canarians I posted, Canarians average 17.4% North African as a whole, but for Tenerife it’s lower at 14.3%.

Check out his North African score on his Eurogenes K15, it shows him to be in the Tenerife-Gran Canaria range for North African (Gran Canaria average is 12.4%) at 11%-15% range on the two population score and similar to Portuguese/Murcia/Extremadura for his single population score because of the elevated North African beyond the Catalan or Castilian population reference:

In a European+SSA comparison it would seem so, but it’s not accurate because it doesn’t match the history of the Canary Islands. If we consider the history of the Canary Islands, there was an indigenous population of North Africans there and Iberians arrived and mixed with them over time, we get a more accurate picture of the history.

Look at the first three lines of this mixed mode (2 population) oracle from Eurogenes K15 as well as line 10 and line 17, it matches perfectly with the history of the Canary Islands in an Iberian+North African mixture, where the other lines of the oracle do not match the history in an Iberian+SSA mixture:
