I have a suspicion that the Jews invented circumcision as a way of keeping foreign paternal lineages out of their gene pool, since it would be a very effective deterrent to Gentile males who might otherwise convert. Seems like it worked, since 85% or so of Ashkenazi paternal lineages are Levantine.
