Like many cities in Europe and particularly in Scandinavia where people build in wood Ålesund has seen it's fair share of fires. The last huge fire to devastate the city took place on 23 January 1904. The city was rebuild with German help and with personal interest by Emperor William II who took a personal interest in the matter as he spend a lot of time in the area of Sunnmøre. The city was rebuild in the latest style that period had to offer: Art Nouveau.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/93/General_view%2C_Alesund%2C_Norway.jpg
Ålesund in 1900 before the fire. The view is from the east looking west as seen from the local mountain Aksla. The bulk of the island Aspøya can be seen in the foreground; the near channel is demarked by the harbor to the right. The fire began on the island, near the last buildings on the island in the upper left. Note that a west wind would push the fire toward the more densely built up areas. The fire was finally controlled at a point to the left, behind the point from which this picture was taken; most of the buildings seen here were destroyed.

The land of my maternal ancestors is, indeed, very beautiful. I have never visited Norway, and, inasmuch as I hate to fly, I suppose that I never shall.
These photos show me what I have been missing.

Kjempevakre bilder! Makes me feel so nostalgic for the time I spent in Norway as a kid.
Personal story: after I had turned one year of age, me and my family moved to Norway (Mo i Rana in Nordland province) due to better job opportunities there and we lived there for about 5 years. Just recently returned to visit a friend for a birthday party who lives in a rural area near Bodø and I couldn't stop thinking about how immensely I regret we didn't stay in Norway and moved back to boring old Sweden. The landscapes there are simply breathtaking and the people so much nicer and less cranky than the average Swede. Norway also feels like a much more interesting and characteristically Nordic place than Sweden with regards to things like history, culture, geography, architecture and diversity of regional dialects. These days, most parts of Sweden feels like a bland copy of generic Americanized "western culture".
Rural northern Norway is also an introvert's heaven, seeing as people live so far apart from each other that you often have to take a 30 minute car ride in order to see one of your "neighbours". Considering the political, social and demographic situation in Sweden right now I'm really hoping I'll be able to move back there at some point.

Oslo Central Station, Norwegian: Oslo sentralstasjon, abbreviated Oslo S, is the main railway station in Oslo, and the largest railway station within the entire Norwegian railway system. It is the terminus of Drammen Line, Gardermoen Line, Gjøvik Line, Hoved Line and Østfold Line. It serves express, regional and local rail services by four companies. The railway station is owned by Rom Eiendom and operated by Bane NOR, and was opened in 1980.
Oslo Central was built on the site of the older Oslo East Station (Oslo Østbanestasjon, Oslo Ø), the combining of the former east and west stations being made possible by the opening of the Oslo Tunnel. Oslo Central has nineteen tracks, thirteen of which have connections through the Oslo Tunnel. The station has two buildings, the original Oslo East building and the newer main building for Oslo Central. Each building houses a large shopping centre. The square in front of the station is called Jernbanetorget.

I'm also intrigued with Norway's Atlantic Ocean Road (which is ranked as one of the world's most treacherous - yet beautiful, unusual, and interesting roads.)

Among the thousands of NATO troops during exercise Trident Juncture in Norway, there was a platoon of Norwegian snipers. This piece profiles Senior Sergeant Stian from that platoon, as he reveals what kit he carries. In his bag is everything needed for a sniper to survive out in the cold for at least seven days. During Trident Juncture 18, around 50,000 personnel from 31 NATO Allies and partner countries tested their ability to operate together in NATO’s biggest exercise in recent years. Held in Norway, the exercise ran from 25 October until 7 November.

This special trip is called Norway in a Nutshell. Showing you a big cross-section of the country in just one day.

Presentation of Norway's history and contribution to Western defense and the Atlantic Community. "Introducing Norway" is part of a series originally designed as "Know your Allies", and finally titled "the Atlantic Community Series". Its objectives were to familiarize public opinion in each of the member country with the other Alliance members and to emphasize the national contributions to Western culture and political traditions, economic reconstruction and allied defense in the framework of NATO. The series was produced between 1954 and 1956 and financed by the US government in the context of the Marshall Plan with the cooperation of the Information Service of NATO, and distributed by NATO. The films in the Atlantic Community Series received large non-theatrical distribution and, in some cases, were shown in cinemas and on TV. Language versions were made and distributed with the help of the national governments. “My country and NATO” tells the story of each one of NATO’s members, using a selection of unique archival materials to take you back in time. Further information: This video reviews the train journey from Bergen to Oslo, Norway in October 2017. Captions will give you further information and tips about this very scenic journey. This train is run by Norway national state railways: NSB (Norges Statsbaner AS - since April 2019 NSB was rebranded as Vy). I read so much about it and unfortunately a previous trip to Oslo didn't give me the chance to experience this epic train journey on the Bergen Line (Bergensbanen). Known for its wet weather, Bergen offered a stunning sunny and crisp weather for my stay there and (apart for some morning mist), I enjoy the same sunny weather during my journey to Oslo. The views were spectacular and the autumn colours added a special dimension to the landscape offered. The time flew past and the changing landscape from fjords, barren high altitude plateau, snow capped mountains and pine forests and lakes kept my attention high throughout the journey. I can't recommend enough this experience. Is it one of Europe's or the World's best train journey? You decide - maybe from this video or experiencing for yourself. I bought the tickets online directly from NSB: https://www.vy.no/en/buy-tickets/trai... (https://www.youtube.com/redirect?v=lZVHXbBSASU&redir_token=iEgH0YdalW0U4j3Az1k7GR-Wapt8MTU3NDAzMTM4MUAxNTczOTQ0OTgx&event=video_description&q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.vy.no%2Fen%2Fbuy-tickets%2Ftrain-tickets) My train journey was to take more than the 6hr 45 min scheduled. The train was delayed by more than an hour - a quick search online confirmed that I was entitled to a refund for such a delay: https://www.nsb.no/en/our-tickets/boo... (https://www.youtube.com/redirect?v=lZVHXbBSASU&redir_token=iEgH0YdalW0U4j3Az1k7GR-Wapt8MTU3NDAzMTM4MUAxNTczOTQ0OTgx&event=video_description&q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nsb.no%2Fen%2Four-tickets%2Fbooking-conditions%2Fhow-to-claim-a-refund-and-compensation) The train also stops at Myrdal station where you can take the branch line to Flåm. This service is privately run and tickets can be bought on the link below: https://booking.visitflam.com/en/to-d... (https://www.youtube.com/redirect?v=lZVHXbBSASU&redir_token=iEgH0YdalW0U4j3Az1k7GR-Wapt8MTU3NDAzMTM4MUAxNTczOTQ0OTgx&event=video_description&q=https%3A%2F%2Fbooking.visitflam.com%2Fen%2Fto-do%2Fa1488268%2Fthe-fl%25c3%25a5m-railway%2Fshowdetails) Video includes footage of Bergen train station, carriages (in first class "Komfort", 2nd class and "Kafe" the cafeteria section). You can travel easily by train and bus from Gothenburg to Oslo. I dediced to go with the Norwegian High Speed Train for 45€. You will need nearly 4h for this distance. But the great landscape compensates you for the duration. Within the train you can expect wifi, plug sockets and free coffee. Unfortunately there is nor real restaurant on board of this train - a vending machine only. Overall the experience is quiet positive as it is a very comfortable to travel between these cities. 1:24 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_ZDrEUoTUs&t=84s) Traditional streetcar from Gothenburg 1:50 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_ZDrEUoTUs&t=110s) Lake before the Norwegian border 2:07 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_ZDrEUoTUs&t=127s) Stopover in Halden - The first Norwegian City behind the border 4:20 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_ZDrEUoTUs&t=260s) Arriving at Oslo Central Station Please find more information about train travel in Europe on my website:

Fjord Norway has a rich historical heritage and many visible traces of the Vikings, who ruled the country for an era between AD 800 to 1066. Georg Olafr Reydarsson Hansen is the nearest you’ll get to a real life Viking. Georg and other Viking enthusiasts meet every year at the Viking Market in Gudvangen. A Viking village is under construction here, situated in spectacular scenery at the end of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Nærøyfjord. http://www.fjordnorway.com/top-attrac... The Norway film tells the story of Scotland’s twin nation. We have the same population, share the oil, gas and fishing resources of the North Sea and have similar geography. But over the last 200 years Norway has withdrawn from a Union with first Denmark and then Sweden and has invested its oil wealth wisely while Margaret Thatcher squandered ours. This much we already know. But did you know Norwegians have chosen to continue paying some of the highest personal taxes in the world to stabilise their oil-based economy – using the oil fund only to top up budgets not underpin them? Did you know hydro was the first big energy revolution, possible because Norway had no feudal landowners blocking the development of free energy for all? And – perhaps most importantly – did you know the widespread ownership of land in the 19th century meant Norway created one of the world’s widest electorates and therefore one of its most egalitarian parliaments? These democratic achievements underpin Norway’s success every bit as much as independence and raise hopes and tough questions about Scotland’s future. Can we hope to use renewables to match the incredible achievements of our twin nation?

Ever since the big announcement carried worldwide in 2015 that Oslo, Norway's new progressive city government planned to make the downtown car-free by 2019, I immediately put it on my list of places I wanted to go and see what's up. And that only got more intriguing a year later when following that fanfare, there wasn't a ton of news or documentation updating us on Oslo's progress towards its amazing goal. So in fall 2016 I went- not knowing if I'd find if progress was slow or fast, and how much I could show visually. First off, it is a lovely, clean city. It already features some nice blocks of car-free or car-light pedestrian zones which are heavily populated even late at night. And I knew it was a good sign when I stepped off the bus from the airport a block later and I stumbled upon construction of a new rail line. Oslo is certainly on its way, and even skeptics seem to know going at least as car-free as possible is inevitable. Besides it being a great environmental goal for the city and to manage growth, Oslo is one of - if not the fastest - growing city in all of Europe.
However, the biggest factor is that the air quality in Oslo and many places in Norway is deteriorating. Due to inversion in winter it can be dangerous to the public and keeps vulnerable children and seniors restricted indoors. Oslo is aiming to reach its goal on many fronts. The city has been aggressively removing car parking and by the end of 2017, they expect to no longer have any on-street parking in the city's core. All new developments are required to be built car-free. Ruter, the transportation authority for Oslo, is planning on absorbing all new city population growth in addition to the task of converting current drivers to ride buses, trains and trams. Car share systems are beginning to dominate as more families want to live near the city without a personal vehicle. Oh, and there's this nifty plan to help people pay for electric-assist cargo bikes! The city's bike share Oslo Bysykkel has recently been completely overhauled in favor of better stronger, lighter system with more stations and better interactivity system. You can actually unlock your bike by smart phone as you approach the station, just take it and go. I've never seen anything like it! Of the 26 bike share systems I've ridden, I'd say it is in my top three favs. Bike lanes are also being built or upgraded throughout Oslo. Here you will not find ample Copenhagen-style protected bike facilities, but thanks to the on-going car parking removal it creates the opportunity for many wide, red-painted curbside lanes.
Despite lack of true separation they feel rather safe and unlike a similar style that might be tried in the U.S., you will not find cars parking in the lanes. Over four days I probably could count on one hand the number of cars I saw sitting in the lanes. Momentum is certainly on the city's side and an already great city will one day be fantastic for walking, biking and transit. Will they go completely car-free? Will they do it by 2019? We will find out in a few years. So sit back and listen to a diverse group of voices I got to interview, including Oslo's charming Mayor Marianne Borgen talk about the philosophy of why all this is being done and the implications for a better Oslo in years to come. Enjoy this movie. It is one of my favorite and an important one for the future of the planet.

Germany invaded Norway in April 1940, and defeated the Nordic nation in a 62-day campaign. But Norwegians continued to serve the Allied cause throughout the war. One of the least remembered, most important, and most unique roles was not about strength of arms, but about gross tonnage. The History Guy remembers the critical role played by "the largest shipping company in the world." This is original content based on research by The History Guy. Images in the Public Domain are carefully selected and provide illustration. As very few images of the actual event are available in the Public Domain, images of similar objects and events are used for illustration.

Near Bodø in Norway, there's the strongest tidal current in the world: Saltstraumen Maelstrom, a constantly-changing rush of whirlpools, boils and vortices. It might not be quite the whirlpools of myth and legend, but it's still an impressive sight to see.

It's known as one of the world's scariest tourist attractions, for good reason -- but despite the millions that visit it, it's pretty safe. At least, for current human values of safe. Let's talk about risk, immortality, and what it means to be human. Thanks to my friends Tim, who held the camera, and Matt, who got the shot from the boat below. It never gets truly dark here in Norway during summer. When you think it's going to be dark soon the reality is that the sun has already started to rise again, this also means that during the winter we have the complete opposite with "short days" and "long nights". The summer is usually the time when we spring to life and enjoy all the light we can. This is the over night train from Oslo to Bergen with departure from Oslo Central Station diverted over the Gjøvik Line because of track work between Oslo and Drammen. Captured with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera I'm finally able to show you the true colors, light and view from the drivers cab on a night train in 4K. On Saturday July 25th at 8:30PM CET I will be live answering questions here: https://youtu.be/rE44NbGqKo4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rE44NbGqKo4). A Norwegian fjord cruise is high on my list, but I don't quite have the budget for it, so a ferry trip it is! The only problem is I decided to do it in summer and it would appear our neighbours across the North Sea have quite similar summers to us over here in Scotland :D Join me today and we'll see past the weather (hopefully) to enjoy this short voyage up the Norwegian coastline from Stavanger to Bergen. It's definitely cheap, but is it worth doing?...

Oslo is a city that is changing quickly. After electing a left-wing majority government in 2015, the city has implemented a number of sweeping changes to make their streets safer and to increase cycling numbers. It's still very much a work in progress, with new street design guidelines there's a lot of good progress in the right direction.
Will Oslo become the next great cycling city?

We made a very long road trip from The Netherlands to Germany, to Denmark, to Sweden and then towards Norway from the North to the South. What an amazing country this is. As a nature enthusiast or nature lover, Norway really is a special place to capture its beauty.
Most footage are from Hallingskarvet Nasjonal Park, Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella Nasjonalpark, Hardangervidda nasjonalpark.

n this video i’m telling you the whole story why i moved to norway! it’s actually not just a happy story, but i decided to share it with you really honest. i remember in the periods where i felt so stuck and depressed i always was deeply grateful for people that shared also about the dark times in their lifes. it made me feel less alone and i think it can be so healing when we’re starting to open up to each other. so i hope you like the video, i hope you’re okay and even if not, let me tell you, you are not alone with it. ♥

Longyearbyen on Svalbard is the world's northernmost permanently inhabited community: https://www.lifeinnorway.net/longyear...
The population is just a little over 2,000, yet in many ways Longyearbyen functions like any other town. There's a supermarket, bars, church, cinema, school, and even a municipal swimming pool. Come with me on a tour of Longyearbyen!
