Lol who do you think supported Castro gaining power? It wasn't the Soviets. Even JFK compared the Cuban revolution to the American one. The US didn't like the "other dictator" Cuba had. Cuba was seen as a threat to American economy because it was stronk as fuck for a small island thanks to the "other dictator" they had. Cuba would've been another Korea or Vietnam if the US didn't like what was happening there after 1959.

Cuba was considered an allied to USA, as you said despite being an small island had had an economy, population, importance and gdo per capital that rivalized powerfull american states such as Florida or Georgia. But USA never saw that as a treat, otherwise they could even annex Cuba and send immigrants and turn the island to an state, sometype of PR/Florida/Georgia mix.
