In celebration of Tallinn's status as European Capital of Culture this year, a series of 10 concerts taking place from March 4 to 13 will be aired by the European Broadcasting Union, introducing foreign listeners to the best ensembles, soloists, choirs and orchestras Estonia has to offer.

Erkki-Sven Tüür, the most prominent composer in the series, will see the premier of his major composition "Awakening" on March 10. The work will be peformed by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, according to Anneli Tõevere-Kaur, head of ERR media relations.

Other perfomances in the series will be given by the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Olari Elts and by the Nordic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Anu Tali. The Estonian National Opera will perform Rimsky-Korsakov’s “The Tsar’s Bride” under Arvo Volmer.

The Estonian National Male Choir's performance will be dedicated to the victims of the Tallinn bombing that took place on March 9, 1944, Tõevere-Kaur said.

Also taking to the stage will be Mari Kalkun, a rising star in Estonia’s young folk music community, and the talented jazz vocalist Kadri Voorand.

The concerts will be broadcast in 10 European Union nations as well as in Australia, Norway, Croatia and Serbia.

The concert program is available on the Klassikaraadio website (http://www.klassikaraadio.ee/tallinn2011_eng).

Erkki-Sven Tüür sure is an intriguing composer. His one-movement symphony Strata is both methodical and calculated, yet intense and passionate at the same time. Very, erm .... Nordic.
