What to consider when moving to Prague from Germany (self.Prague)

submitted 4 days ago by GrimerPua

Hi all,

I'm considering a move from Munich to Prague. I've visited Prague once for 4 days and I've stayed here two weeks for work.

I have a rough impression that Prague, compared to Munich, is slightly cheaper (maybe I just been in touristic places, maybe it's cheaper then just slightly cheaper). Also, Prague there's much more cultural life and more stuff in general going on in the city. Honestly, Munich is quite boring.

I think public transportation here is comparable if not better than Munich's. Also, my impression is that Prague is way more foreign friendly then Munich, people don't give you an hard time if you don't speak the local language (how truth is that, how does it work with bureaucracy, would English be enough?)

But above all, what's the cost of life here? Renting, food, services, etc.

Please feel free to feed me as much info about this beautiful city as you can. Thanks in advance

Hi there,

I might be able to give you a tip or two. I come from Munich and lived in Prague for 3 years.

Excellent city to live in, high quality of life, dirt cheap and great people.

You will earn less than in Germany. If you have a good job you come around 1400-1500 Euro Net. Which is great. That's about 48000 CZK. The average salary is around 20000CZK.

When I lived there, I went out for dinner almost every day of the week. On average, for a meal + 2 beers you pay around 200czk, that's less than 8 euros.

It sounds funny, but I am back in Munich and earn more than twice what I've earned in Prague and I can't afford to go out more than once a week (I could but it would be noticeable on my Banking Account more than I like).

Would I go back to Prague? Absolutely, and probably will at some point in the future.

Public transport is better than in Munich, almost always on time and dirt cheap. If you buy a 3,6 or 12 Month ticket it's ridiculous.

Everyone speaks at least a bit of English, most people speak great English. You get integrated very fast as Czechs are really open and nice to foreigners. You will find friends very easy.

I wont even start about Czech Girls, but they are awesome. Far less spoiled than Germany and most of them very easy and outgoing.

For cost of life, it highly depends where you want to live. Close to city? Prices went up a lot in the past few years. You might have to pay 600-700 Euros for close proximity to the city. Small apartment.

If you are willing to live a bit more outside somewhere on the metro line which is connected to the city, you can still get great value, if you don't mind living in a Plattenbau.

That's all what I got from top of my head, oh and one more thing. Be ready to not being able to enjoy Bavarian beer anymore, because once you get hooked to Czech, there is no way back :D

You can shoot me a PM of what your line of work is, I still have plenty business contacts in Prague and might be able to hook you up with someone who might even be able to help you find an apartment and get started.

Good luck and from my point of view: Absolutely go for it, you will love Prague, Munich is boring AF compared to it.

Let me put a Edit on the bottom:

Not so great:

Doctors, if you are used to German standards, you will have a laugh or two.
Officials like Immigration, are assholes like everywhere else
Homeless people, you will meet a lot of them. Somebody smelling of piss and shit sleeping in your Metro or Tram to work? Better deal with it, it will happen. Although the homeless and alcohols are plenty, I never had any dangerous or even any encounter other than smelling them. Don't bother them, they won't bother you.
Hospitals, go back to Germany if you need an operation. I don't say Czech doctors are bad, but once you step foot into a Czech hospital, you wish to be back in Germany.
Super Markets, Albert(Super Market Brand) is the Cancer of this planet. Worst super market I've ever been in. They also have Tesco and Billa and other ones, but generally you can't compare it with Germany. They stepped up their game in recent years and things got better, but you still have more choices in Germany. Tesco is good tho.

The average brutto wage in Prague for the 4th quarter of 2017 was over 39000 CZK and for the rest of the country around 31k.

And of course this does not show the earnings of people on trade liscences and entrepreneurs which would likely raise it further.

Looks like most have been said already, but here's another foreigner with 20+ years of experience living in UK, Canada, Finland and Switzerland (in no particular order and all after leaving his home country as an adult) before moving to this country because of marriage and kids. I lived in Prague for five years and now in Brno for over a year and all my experiences are positive. This is by far the best country I lived in, and the most peaceful. Recently got permanent residence and will definitely try to be a citizen, although I hold another EU passport (well, until Brexit, that is).

Thank you all Czechs for welcoming me into your country and making me feel at home.

All scared CzR will one day overtake theirs in standard of living calling CzR a shithole, which it isn't. Educational level is worse in Spain than in CzR and the future is important.

Also, East Germany is an economic graveyard. Post-communism really has such lasting impact for generations.

Your reality denying is comparable with flat earthers or young earth creationists. You know I’m absolutely right, regarding my views, but you won’t accept any of that solely because it is not convenient, and at the same time, you seem to kind of believe your delusion. In psychology, it is called cognitive dissonance.

Not true. In the last PISA Test, Spain was above Czechia 9 points in Reading, same in Science and 6 points below in Maths.

And this shit happens because the fuckin Andalusians and Canarians are total retards. Regions like Castilla y León, Navarra or Madrid are in the same level or even above than the first countries in the list let alone Czechia.

Forgot to take into account Andalusians. However CzR has a high percentage of Gypsies. 'So does Spain' you might tell me? Yes, but CzR also has hohols flooding in en masse. They drag down the level severely. ;)

Don't mind him. I have been to Czech Republic as well and the impression I got was that it is a nice nation with a solid export-oriented economy\industry and a low unemployment rate. Czechs are by far the biggest sucess case out of all the nations from the former eastern bloc.

I don't know the whole country of Czechia but Prague is nice. I remember I spend one crazy night in some big Disco close to the river...drinking Pivo.
I was the best dancer that night and the Czech women knew it

I remember the Czech coins were very big and heavy to carry.

I was in Praha for 1 week. I stayed near the main street Vaclavske namesti, not far from the national museum.
I remember going to the clubs at the end of Vaclavske , lots of pretty local girls but very touristy too. This was years ago but I recall there was many American sportsbars and Praha was full of Americans. One day my friend and I went into a bar/pub , we got our beers and went to sit outside in the beergarden area, there was bunch of young Czek guys smoking joints, my friend went over and bought a few joints off them lol, they were smoking so openly I almost forgot we left Amsterdam lol.
Anyway Praha was beautiful city, local people did not seem overly friendly nor hostile, nice girls easy to walk up and talk too. Aesthetically very beautiful city one of Central Europes most stunning.
Oh forgot to mention in Praha is the first and only time I tried the real Absinthe.
