Similar to Sephardi Jews, I think.

Thanks - so you think they're essentially a mix of Greeks and native West Asians?

Yes, I do think that. Or native western Anatolian people (who would have been different than Pontians).

So they're even more exotic than Sicilians, but less so than Cypriots.

Samos was repopulated with mainland settlers.

Samos was repopulated with mainland settlers.

Greek islands were populated by refugees of Smyrna not mainlanders

As most people already know, Modern Turkey renamed it: Formerly called Smyrna, it's now called Izmir.

With the Smyrna Fire, nearly a century ago (in 1922), Smyrna's ancestral composition was radically modified. Smyrna's Christian Quarters were burned to the ground; as many as 100,000 Greeks and Armenians were slaughtered there; 30,000 Greek and Armenian men were deported into the interior, where most of them were worked to death or executed; and, as many as 200,000 destitute Greek and Armenian Refugees were exiled to Greece.

Maybe someone can exhume the bones from the bottom of the Aegean Sea, who drowned when they tried to swim to safety. That way we can do DNA Tests with the bones of those whom drowned.
