I know they are more related to Italians than either of the two, however I know that Basques are related to Irish, and that Germanic tribes like the Visigoths and Vandals left an impact on Spanish DNA

Irish I guess.

Spanish are closer genetically to Germans than Irish and Irish are closer to Germans than to Spanish.
Here's a genetic distance table.
Spanish to Germans 0.0015
Spanish to Irish 0.0037
Germans to Irish 0.0010
Basques are a population isolate and not particularly close to anyone but here are the distances
Basque to Spanish 0.0060
Basque to Germans 0.0079
Basque to Irish 0.0086

Regarding the thread question, I think that southern Germans might be a bit closer to Iberians than Irish, while Irish would be a bit closer to Iberians than Northern Germans.

I met Spaniards in South India, some of them tanned fast...
So who do you think are the darkest, Italians? Greeks? I saw dark Greeks too.

Sicilians, Calabrians and Maltese (not as dark as portrayed, but a bit darker than all other southern Euros).
I don't think Greeks are particularly dark, but I think they have a bit lower rates of blondism/light eyes than Iberians.

Here's a huge genetic distance plot. It is quite interesting looking at the distances between some populations. Some populations are closer than you would expect given their geographic proximity
e.g. Irish to Slovenian 0.017
Irish to Polish 0.029
Irish to Spanish 0.034
Irish to Russian 0.035
Irish to Portuguese 0.036

Not really. The royalty was mostly Germanic, but there was never large settlement of Germanic peoples. The areas vacated and depopulated by the Moorish and Morisco expulsions were later resettled by people from other regions of Spain.

Europe is a small peninsula. It's not even technically an actual continent. This is no surprise.

I would say Germans and specifically Southern Germans. Interestingly, me being both South German and Spanish on my paternal side, so I've thought about the ways our two peoples are related. This is even though the Celtic admixture may suggest the Irish are closer, but they generally are much more Nordic in appearance. South Germans also carry the blood of the Celts who inhabited our regions and indeed the oldest Celtic culture - the Hallstatt, was centered in modern Schwaben, Bayern, Schweiz and Osterreich. Our Germanic ancestors mixed with these pre-existing peoples, just like the Celts who settled in the Iberian Peninsula mixed with the pre-existing Iberians and Lusitanians. Along with the ones in Gaul, it seems that the continental Celts intermarried early on with others more than did the insular Celts. So it's natural there would be a greater exchange of genetics on both sides of the Pyrenees.

I like your post Sean-Jobst but I don't like the term Nordic in relation to Irish people. I know people use these descriptors but I prefer the term Northwestern. I wish they got some genomes from Hallstatt but I think Celts were already widespread at that time.

Thank you. Yes, I guess Nordic can be tied specifically to Scandinavia so perhaps Northwestern is a more fitting description in this case.

The Finns are lighter. They are the whitest phenotypically. Almost all have blue eyes and light hair. For example we Russians/Eastern Europeans are darker than them.

The Maltese are basically Semites, not Europeans to me. They are not even mainland Europe and speak a mutated Arabic dialect.
Mainland Greeks are definitely European and white (in the Southern Euro sense), while Asia Minor and Caucasus Greeks are not European genetically, since they rather cluster with Armenians. However, as I have learned on this forum and Wikipedia, Greece has been swamped by Pontic and Soviet Greek refugees and repatriates over the past century, hence there's a number of fucking dark football players in Greece, lol

It isn't though and you are ignoring all genetics but that is not unusual for you. You don't really care what the evidence shows.

I'm a bit surprised that Cornwall sample is closer to certain ethnic groups than Kent. For example 0.003 v 0.005 for Dutch. It's the same (0.006) for both groups to the Irish.
