View Full Version : My Ancestry DNA results doubts

Hi everyone,

I'am a bit sceptical with my results I mean how accurate are these tests? I expected my central Asian Turkic ancestry to be high, if I resubmit my DNA specimen surely I will get different results by the same company. Do these companies do in depth tests or they just do a rough estimate by comparing your sample to your closest neighbours? Whats with all the different regions does that mean my ancestors got raped in the past or something. How do I find out what group I belong to? sorry I don't know much about genealogy so please forgive me. Below is my results which I have doubts to be honest.

You're very Anatolian and have very little actual Turkic ancestry, congrats! Do you think your country was overrun by Turkic peoples who spread their genes in every tiny Anatolian village

His gedmatch results say he has Turkic heritage (17-20%). Though, judging from his results he's from Eastern Anatolia. Hardly a native Anatolian if from Eastern Anatolia. Also, personal gedmatch results of Turks say that the Turkics indeed spread their genes in almost every part of Anatolia.

If you say so, I don't care really. I really don't see how people can put pride in it though as Anatolia has an amazing history; the Turks were just a relatively insignificant drop in the ocean of historical achievements and development.

we were so insignificant that we managed to destroy the Eastern Roman empire. I agree with you. Also not mentioning all the conquests in the Middle East, Europe and Northern Africa. Just a drop in the ocean :)

No, they were already heavily in decline -- it was comparable with the Italo-Turkish war when the Ottomans were defeated in 1912 -- they just needed a little push to fall from the cliff. I don't believe you're a full descendant of the Selcuk-Turks by the way; I think you are most probably 95% native Anatolian/Armenian/Persian mix.
When I read Wikipedia on Turkish genetics there's a complete different picture presented and the Central Asian contribution appears to be low in Turkey.

Clearly no sign of Turkic influence. Right?

"When I read Wikipedia on Turkish genetics there's a complete different picture presented and the Central Asian contribution appears to be low in Turkey."

Okay.

Let's go to wikipedia, what does it say?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetic_studies_on_Turkish_people

The largest autosomal study on Turkish genetics (on 16 individuals) concluded the weight of East Asian (presumably Central Asian) migration legacy of the Turkish people is estimated at 21.7%.[1] The authors conclude on the basis of previous studies that "South Asian contribution to Turkey's population was significantly higher than East/Central Asian contributions, suggesting that the genetic variation of medieval Central Asian populations may be more closely related to South Asian populations, or that there was continued low level migration from South Asia into Anatolia." They note that these weights are not direct estimates of the migration rates as the original donor populations are not known, and the exact kinship between current East Asians and the medieval Oghuz Turks is uncertain. For instance, genetic pools of Central Asian Turkic peoples is particularly diverse and modern Oghuz Turkmens living in Central Asia are with higher West Eurasian genetic component than East Eurasian.[2][3][4]

Lots of uncertainties but yes, looking at these GEDmatch results, we do see a somewhat significant contribution from Turkic population groups. The Anatolians must've been even more hospitable than the Greeks xD

The Anatolian Greeks who converted to Islam, it seems, blended into the Turkish population. So the Turks were the welcoming ones, instead of destroying the Anatolians completely and not considering the converted ones as Turks, they accepted them as Turks and mixed with them.

Then how exactly would one know their ancestry components? This is exactly why I'm having a tough time believing any of these results. Is there anything other than Gedmatch that we can use?

we were so insignificant that we managed to destroy the Eastern Roman empire. I agree with you. Also not mentioning all the conquests in the Middle East, Europe and Northern Africa. Just a drop in the ocean :)

Probably, he wasn't talking about martial achievements, but the kind that creates new wonders of civilization instead. In that respect, most of the Turkish accomplishments are rip-offs that have been stripped or stolen from more indigenous people in the area.

So according to yiou, which regions in modern day Turkey have the lowest Central Asian contribution? I've seen lot sof Turks from around Ankara and Trabzon and they look more like a mix of Greek, Caucasion and some Middle Eastern with an Asian vibe in some cases, with a small minority looking more Central Asian influenced.
