Not really. It's the opposite. Southern Chinese have rounder faces, while Koreans have more angular features like Northern Chinese and Mongols. Koreans generally have broader faces though than the Cantonese.

Oh really? I have the opposite schema in my head because one of my friends is half Cantonese and has the most robust features, as do his Cantonese relatives

Of course there are exceptions.

Slightly off topic and no offense to the Cantonese, but damn Cantonese sounds way uglier than Mandarin, which when spoken clearly (say by aristocrats in TV dramas rather than peasants) sounds quite nice. I may be biased but I think Mandarin sounds better than Korean too. Probably the most interesting non-Mandarin dialect I've heard is Minnan.

I think Cantonese sounds beautiful. And the Cantonese have the funniest accents when they learn English, hands down

I totally agree. Mandarin, when spoken in its standard form, is generally pretty smooth and non-abrasive. Cantonese sounds horrible, like a bunch of alley cats having a death match. Korean sounds pretty fucking horrible too, like someone constantly nagging or crying out in pain. Minnan actually sounds like shit too.

Japanese sounds good. I think Mandarin and Japanese are two of the few East Asian languages that actually sound decent.

You don't see the correlation. I will post real life people in the future for comparison when I get the chance.

No matter what your first language is, it'll always sound pleasant to the ears because of the vowel endings. The closest sounding european language to it would be finnish (or so I heard).

Actually you may find an even more horrific sounding language in Antony Pv's native Vietnamese. I'm not a big fan of many southeast asian sounds but this one is just... interesting

Compared to Mandarin, I think I'll stick to my 'ching chong chang' language :laugh

Mandarin is at least soft sounding, even when its speakers are being cruel.

Vietnamese is definitely the worst sounding language. Thai is a close second. That video is hilarious btw. For those who can't understand Chinese, he basically asks for directions from young girls, and then after they tell him directions, he goes "Thanks Auntie". lol

I would say Tagalog that language is one of the worst Asian sounding languages. The best sounding Asian language is Mongolian followed by Japanese, then followed by Mandarin. Southeast Asian languages for the most part are ugly, the exception would be the Sino-Tibetan languages like Burmese which does not sound bad. Austronesian languages are pretty ugly, not being racist or anything, it's just they don't have nice sounds. I could be biased but it's to much clicky like, Siberian Turkic is beautiful more so than Anatolian Turkic though, all dialects.

Japanese sounds better than all asian languages

Mandarin is strange, sometimes it seens that they don't even speak with sentences, just with disconnected syllables, very strange and fun language

Yea for whatever reason a lot of people dislike Mandarin, but I think it can be an especially poetic and philosophic language, especially when spoken in that manner. Take for example the little bit spoken at the beginning here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJDpn-WU3n8&t=

Or when spoken in a soft manner, to my ears it sounds very sage-like, take for example how this man speaks:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_KaHW_X0ZM&t

Personally I like it better than Japanese, which I'll admit sounds cool when it is spoken in by a manly samurai in a movie or some anime warrior-hero though.

Most people who say they dislike Mandarin say that because they confuse it with Cantonese, or they have heard some peasants screaming at each other or something. Standardized Mandarin spoken by educated people is actually very smooth.

I don't think you can tell the difference between Mandarin and Cantonese. Mandarin is very smooth and well connected.

They're the some ignoramuses who think German is harsh-sounding while knowing nothing about it probably (and link a video of a person yelling German random words exaggeratedly), few (myself included) actually are in a position to consider themselves an authority on Mandarin. :)
I'm an oddball, though, because I find German more beautiful than French or Italian. It's because I understand it, I think. My brain thinks very Germanically.

I have nothing against mandarin, i just said i prefer Japanese and also that mandarin is very strange because its very different to western languages, while japanese at least have some similarities like the pronunciation of japanese is similar to latin languages( Portuguese, Spanish, Italian), also Japanese have lots of word derivated from English and Portuguese( that is not surprising since the Portuguese were the first Europeans to make contact with the Japanese people).

But yes, i cannot say much because i don't know much about mandarin, i only know mandarin is very different from everything, the words are short but strange, the pronunciation is funny and complicated to listen, mostly because mandarin have lots of entonation for the same word.

But i like mandarin and i would like to learn it because i like Chinese culture very much and i would like to visit China! :thumb001:
