The acordeon and concertina have some relevance in Northern Portuguese (especially in Minho) folklore music. Possibly the acordeon reached Portugal via Portuguese soldiers after their return home from France in World War I.

Dominicans are better with diatonic two row accordions. Typically the holner erica is used for merengue now. I like mangulina type merengues a bit better in the tipico catagory though
