What should I do?

--23andme

or

--$79 FTDNA (autosomal) with a cheap y-dna test from somewhere else (idk which one)

23andme.

Neither. Buy AncestryDNA which is much better than FTDNA and it also give basic haplogroup trough other websites.

23andme is good but more expensive.

23andme.

I am leaning towards 23andme, as well but ftdna goes further in years I heard.

Actually don't buy 23andme. Their V5 chip is terrible for gedmatch.

I really sugest AncestryDNA.

I think ancestrydna is really bad for Albanians though. Plus the layout looks garbage.

yeah 500 years for 23andme and 2000 years for ftdna apparently.

23andme by far. Gedmatch isn't all that great even though people keep saying it is.

Ftdna does not go back 2000 years.

what do you think about ftdna it goes back further... but how are the matches between ftdna and 23andme?

Ftdna doesn't go back 2000 years. All the companies are very similar and it comes down strictly to opinion.

23andme was very accurate for me. Plus, i think it looks much nicer (even though that doesn't really matter).

People obsess over gedmatch here but it's a different type of calculator. It's not read the same and the results dont mean the same as say 23andme/ancestrydna/ftdna.

In my case I don't regret for having been tested in both 23andme and Ancestry DNA.

I think that each testing company has their own approach when analyzing your DNA, and is good to learn about your genetic composition according to those different approaches. It helps you get a more complete picture of your genetic background.

That's why I'm thinking about getting tested on DNA tribes and in other testing companies when I have a chance.

I think I'm also going to get one cheap y-dna test, like y-12, do you know of any place where I can pick one up for a relatively non-expensive price?

I tired both, and find Ancestry far superior. Plus FTDNA does not give haplogroup for free.
but they are both fine for gedmatch, which matters most.

I don't really care to much for GEDmatch as it isn't as accurate as everyone thinks.

For what do you care than ? ON FTDNA you will get 100% Southeastern Europe and on 23andme 100% Balkan or close to it, like other Albanians.
On Ancestry you will fall in Italy/Greece cluster.

In that case I sugest you to buy YDNA test from yseq, they are chapest and fastest.

I'm not sure I will get 100% southeast europe on ftdna, upper 90 percent balkan is possible for 23andme.

There is debate on whether or not albanians from montenegro, which I am,.... are slightly more slav admixed (some think not, others think so).

Maybe ancestrydna is good but im just not feeling it, supposedly there have been many innaccuracies with albos on it. Many get high eastern europe, but this eastern europe is more like a component, than real ancestry...it's just weird.

East Europe is pretty much same on FTDNA and Ancestry. On23andme it's different, there even southern Slavs will get very high Balkan.

It all depends on reference populations, it's isn't real ancestry. I always sugest you test where your ethnicity is not part of reference populations, because it can make better fit.

Good luck with whatever you chose, they are all decent choice :thumb001:

Thanks I chose 23andme, will probs do another test from ancestrydna, etc. later on. BTW you did 23andme right? Can you register your account without registering kit? I don't have the kit barcode yet, and it's not letting me go forward.

Yes I have. I think you need to register kit first, but not sure, I did it 3 years ago.

Y-DNA = FTDNA

Autosomal = Everywhere is same.

Get a Y-DNA (https://www.yseq.net/product_info.php?cPath=23&products_id=34&osCsid=d57300f892767f91c0b1257a85953c2a) test, only way to know from which Gruda brotherhood you hail from.

Don’t make me come to US and beat your silly ass for getting an autosomal test instead ;)

Y DNA is interesting and all but makes up such a tiny percentage of your DNA. Autosomal is the way to go.

Only through ydna can one trace their ancestry, especially at these prices. These cheap autosomal tests are absolutely useless.

23andme will tell you if you have any recent non-white admixture best, ftdna/ancestry are not accurate at all , even gedmatch splits into components which is not that good for this.

Yeah? He will gain a lot from such a test, his autosomal results will come as 100% ‘Balkan’ like every other Albanian out there. He will be truly fascinated.
