He's from Armenia proper but lives in Russia and comes out similar to Western Armenians. I've always found it interesting that despite sharing borders, Armenians and Georgians don't seem to be closely related.

Armenians are genetically distinct from Georgians because modern "Armenia" was formed to give the Armenians a place to go as consolation for the genocide they faced. The original Armenian homeland was much further south.

Armenians have always shared borders with Georgians, even if historically the majority of the population didn't live close to them. Also, Pontic Greeks (who are in fact Hellenized Armenians) are from further north in the Black Sea region and they get similar results.

True, modern Armenia is only a tiny fraction of historical Armenia, but they always lived there. Also, Cilicia was a colony, not part of their original homeland. But it's true that they originated further South, around lake Van.

The genetic clustering with Assyrians is interesting , always thought they would be closer to old historical Anatolians possibly even with some distant Greek/Phrygian .

Despite that, Assyrians and Armenians look nothing alike. Probably due to climate. The former are a desert-adapted population and the latter a mountain-adapted one.

Here is the data on Armenian population - by region - before WW1:

1. Russian Empire:

Erivan* - 441,000
Elisabethpol - 292,188
Tiflis - 196,189
Kars - 73,406
Batumi - 7,120

*Erivan Governorate is more or less modern Armenia (see the map below):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erivan_Governorate

2. Ottoman Empire:

Van - 185,000
Bitlis - 180,000
Erzeroum - 215,000
Diyarbokir - 105,000
Kharpert - 168,000
Sivas** - 165,000
Haleb - 86,085
Adana - 52,650

**Sebastia in the map below. Haleb & Adana are Cilician Armenians.

But this is Armenian data (Turks claim these numbers are too high):

Yes, see the data I posted above. Modern Armenia was mostly in the Russian Empire before WW1. Armenians were distributed ca. 50/50 between Russian Empire and Ottoman Empire.

Depends from where this Armenian is from. Armenians have large communities in Syria. I have seen Armenians from Syria plot differently from Armenians from Armenia.

Armenians have always shared borders with Georgians

But also with Assyrians. With Georgians to the north and with Assyrians to the south:

We need more samples to compare it. He obviously shifted southern according to his mixed mode pop. sharing. I don't think Armenians are a homogeneous mixed nation. Many Armenians have more MENA because their ancestors were living in Cilicia and Eastern Turkey. Most likely Armenians from Northern Armenia have different results from him.

Some Armenians from Russia have western Armenian roots. Some Armenians from modern day Armenia are also descended from western Armenia(descendants of genocide survivors and repats). Gedmatch doesn't have too many results of Armenians native to eastern Armenia at all. Most results put them as equidistant to Levantines and Georgians, some closer to the former and some to the latter.

Since results for those native to east Armenia are not that many, I'll have to take this DNA test and probably convince a few other people I know to do the same.

Also, if an "Armenian" result doesn't have an Armenian as the top match, chances are that they are mixed or very very atypical. With all due respect, this result is clearly cherry picked.

It's not cherry picked, it's a cousin's match.

Anyway, would you say Western/Cilician Armenians are mixed with Syriacs and/or Christian Arabs?

Prior to the Armenian genocide, not a chance. Most foreign mixing that I've known took place with Assyrians and Pontians. After fleeing to the Levant post genocide, some mixing did happen as I've known a few Armenians with Lebanese and/or Syrian background. Judging by some of these results even, its obvious some mixing did occur with Christian levantines in general.

Btw, whose cousin? That's an atypical result for any type of Armenian, beit western and especially eastern. Keep in mind many of these samples are from diasporans who can have mixed ancestry. I've seen Armenian results that match with Bulgarians, Romanians, Greeks Italians and a bunch of other population matches in their top 10! That's obviously a mixed Armenian. Just like one who doesnt get an Armenian match in their top 2!

Yeah, I meant pre-genocide Armenians. Post genocide Armenians in Levant did mix with local Christians. I myself have some Armenian input via a Maronite grandmother. That's why I'm interested and often post about Armenians. :)

Are you sure that those who get such populations in their top 10 aren't Russian admixed? I've seen half Lebanese half Ukrainian/Russian results and they are also pretty close to Balkanites.

There's a few more like this. This is why I'm skeptical of a lot of these submissions. You get this fuckery here. You have results that dont land an Armenian in the top 3, or even 5. Then theres the one you posted with no Armenian in the top 2 that's closer to a Pali than a Georgian.

It’s Amazing to see how close are Aremnian to Mizrahi Jews (especially Georgian Jews).

But you can see that this is not a genetically typical Armenian because distance to Armenian reference is 6 and he is closer to Assyrians and Georgian Jews than to typical Armenians.

Here is the data on Armenian population - by region - before WW1:

1. Russian Empire:

Erivan* - 441,000
Elisabethpol - 292,188
Tiflis - 196,189
Kars - 73,406
Batumi - 7,120

*Erivan Governorate is more or less modern Armenia (see the map below):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erivan_Governorate

2. Ottoman Empire:

Van - 185,000
Bitlis - 180,000
Erzeroum - 215,000
Diyarbokir - 105,000
Kharpert - 168,000
Sivas** - 165,000
Haleb - 86,085
Adana - 52,650

**Sebastia in the map below. Haleb & Adana are Cilician Armenians.

But this is Armenian data (Turks claim these numbers are too high):

Yes, see the data I posted above. Modern Armenia was mostly in the Russian Empire before WW1. Armenians were distributed ca. 50/50 between Russian Empire and Ottoman Empire.

a few other ged matches with similiar distances . this one has armenian as number 1 but assyrian and mizrahi jewish come close behind
