Each village in Northern Vietnam have their own festivals each with their own customs, rituals, and traditions. Typically the entire village takes part. Communal house or temples serve as a central point of gathering and performance of rituals. Often times the festival involves a parade where participants carry shrines as they walk through the village, but they will always end at the temple or communal house.

There are thousands of different village festivals scattered across Northern Vietnam taking place at different times of the year.

Yes, biological paternal grandparents from Hanoi. Maternal from a rural northern village in Ha Nam province. Both families were part of 1954 migration where massive numbers of northerners moved south.

Here’s an example of shrine carrying procession. Sometimes the shrines are twirled around in circles. I’m told it represents the gods or spirits taking over.

Yes it’s on the northern edge of Hanoi.
